Katie R. Place 《Public Relations Review》2019,45(1):24-34
This qualitative exploratory study applied moral development theory to examine how 35 public relations professionals perceived their on-the-job moral development. Findings suggest that public relations professionals gain moral growth via dialogue and experience-based encounters involving moral values and moral intuition over the span of their careers. Results confirm previous theoretical research regarding moral development of public relations professionals situating practitioners as moral thinkers who apply personal and societal moral values to industry contexts. 相似文献

Long Term Care Ombudsman Complaint data from one state's 261 nursing homes are examined in the study. We assessed differences between male and female groups, including chiefly residents, but also ombudsmen, the residents' relatives or friends, administrators, legal representatives, and others regarding types and rates of complaints as reported in the Administration on Aging (AoA) major categories of: Resident Care, Resident Rights, Administration, Quality of Life, and Complaints Not Against Facility. Proportionately, male residents lodged more complaints than females. Further, males complained more than females about Resident Rights violations and filed more Complaints Not Against Facility. Females lodged significantly more complaints about Care, Quality of Life and Administration. Thus, males were more likely to report technical, impersonal, and legalistic issues, than females, who were more likely to express concerns about personal care and socioemotional-environmental issues. Results yielded further evidence of gender differences in the patterns of resident complaints. Nursing home social workers are highlighted as agents in changing embedded stereotypes about residents and complaints. 相似文献

Epidemiological studies have consistently reported prevalence rates ranging between 0.9 and 23.5% for problem gambling among
young people. With such a large range reported in the literature, it is clear that more research in this area would be of
value. The current study investigated the prevalence rate of adolescent gambling and problem gambling and explored types of
harm-related and help-seeking behaviours associated with gambling specific to this population in an Australian setting. A
self-administered battery of questionnaires was distributed to 252 students aged 12–18 years, attending four private schools
in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The battery included a self-administered socio-gambling demographic questionnaire,
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fourth Edition Multiple Response Juvenile (DSM-IV-MR-J) diagnostic instrument to assess
problem gambling status, the Gambling Attitudes Scale, and questionnaires using a Likert scale to measure gambling-related
harms and help-seeking behaviours. The prevalence rate among this group was found to be 6.7%. The study found further support
for previous findings suggesting that a significant proportion of young people meet criteria for problem gambling, that males
are at-risk and that few adolescents are able to recognise when gambling is problematic or access mental health professionals
for assistance. 相似文献

Flood hazards are a serious and growing threat to the health and welfare of residents in cities and rural areas around the world. This cross-sectional study uses a sample of 383 residents living in seven New Orleans, Louisiana, neighborhoods to examine the effect of experiential, sociodemographic, and socioeconomic factors on flood risk perceptions. Findings suggest that respondents judge the level of flood risk to be lower than other types of risk. Results from ordinal logistic regression analyses show that flood risk perception is influenced by flood experience, income, race, gender, homeownership status, and years residing in New Orleans. Our findings support extant scholarship showing that African Americans tend to have higher perceptions of risk than whites and that low-income people and women have higher risk perceptions than higher income residents and men. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for risk management planning in coastal cities like New Orleans that face omnipresent flood threats associated with climate-change-driven sea level rise and increased frequency and destructiveness of storms. 相似文献

Opiate abuse in the United States is on the rise among the college student population. This public health crisis requires immediate action from professionals and stakeholders who are committed to addressing the needs of prospective, current, and recovering opiate users using comprehensive prevention methods. Such approaches have been used to deliver primary, secondary, and tertiary intervention to alcohol and other drug users but are underutilized in the case of opiate abuse among college students in the United States. There is a definite need for involving college campus faculty, staff, students, and others in efforts to prevent opiate abuse at all levels. Our recommendations include specific strategies to address this imminent issue using an innovative application of the traditional Levels of Prevention Model. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis Special Issue on ‘Ageing in Transnational Contexts: Transforming Everyday Practices and Identities in Later Life’ extends our understanding of how ageing is experienced in transnational contexts. It focuses on how everyday lives and identities in older age are being negotiated by individuals who have migration histories or who are affected by the mobilities of others in their lives. In the introduction, we situate our approach within an emerging strand of research investigating the inter-related processes of ageing and transnational migration. We also present the seven empirical case studies that constitute the issue and discuss their collective contribution for the research field. 相似文献

Peripheral Inclusion Through Informal Silencing and Voice — A Study of LGB Officers in the Swedish Police 下载免费PDF全文
Seen through the growth of progressive diversity policies it may appear that contemporary organizations are sites of equality. But although inclusion is the formally stated aim of many organizations, exclusionary pressures toward LGBT workers still challenge sexual minorities' access to full inclusion. A central concern in this paper is exploring how to understand inclusion in organizational contexts where inclusion is formally advocated, and yet where both inclusionary and exclusionary pressures exist. Drawing on an interview study of Swedish gay and lesbian police officers we present the concept ‘peripheral inclusion' as a way to understand inclusion in contemporary organizational life. In addition, we theorize that the dynamics between silencing and voice is a key mode that impacts the informal ways in which exclusion and inclusion occur. We thereby contribute to previous research on inclusion that has focused on the degree to which minorities are included by conceptualizing the mode in which inclusion occurs in everyday work. Studying modes and degrees of inclusion and exclusion in relation to each other highlights how inclusion is a collective and fragile process in which inclusionary and exclusionary pressures coexist, and that questions of who and what is included in contemporary organizations are shifting and open questions. 相似文献
