Temporal and Spatial Evolution Models in Local Reform in Household Registration System and Their Implications

In the process of reform on China’s household registration system after 1978, local governments have gradually taken the role of the central government, becoming the main driving forces of the reform. They have shaped the new trend of the reform by adopting different policies for different households. Examining local reform practices is, therefore, important for further relevant reforms. By sorting a large amount of laws and regulations issued by local governments about the reform on household registration system, and highlighting four polices (namely, temporary residence certificate system, blue seal household register, reform on household registration system of towns, and talents residential certificate system), this paper analyzes the temporal and spatial evolutive trajectory and rules , from the perspective of diffusion, explores the proliferation laws, and provides policy implications.     

Men at Work and at Home: Managing Emotion in Telework

Home‐based telework, as one of the flexible working options available today, is unique in its ability to blur physically and emotionally the boundaries between work and home. This article explores how men experience working from home, how they construct their identities as workers and as parents in this ambiguous location and how, as fathers, they manage the emotional work of reconciling family and career in this context. Our findings suggest that in order to manage the emotional aspects of telework men will, at times, focus on either the professional or parental part of their identity in their narratives, and at times attempt to ‘have it all’. We conclude that telework can provide a space where men can adopt emotional discourses and practices traditionally associated with women and, particularly, with working mothers.     

Global Sourcing and Retail Chains: Shifting Relationships of Production in Australian Agri-foods1

Abstract In the decades following the Second World War supermarkets and retail outlets in North America, Western Europe, and Australasia became the most important sites for the sale of food products. This dominance in food sales was generally confined to the retail sector as supermarkets tended to act as a nexus or distribution point between agri-food producers and consumers. In the 1970s this relationship began to break down as supermarkets moved up the chain of production. Supermarkets began to directly source materials from producers to use in “own” brand and generic products, which soon came to compete with the branded products of agri-food manufacturers. This paper traces the beginnings of these shifts and investigates the consequences of globally-sourced supermarket goods in the context of the Australian agri-food system, with pineapples and wine as case studies. The paper concludes that the increasing size and scope of supermarket buying power and the presence and growth of “own” brands suggests that capital organized through retail channels is coming to rival manufacturing capital as a significant fraction of the Australian agri-food system.     

Mergers and acquisitions in the light of 1992 — Ensuring strategic good sense underpins corporate ambitions

The prospect of executing acquisitions in Europe currently generates more excitement than almost any other item on the corporate agenda. Venturing out of the home market is regarded once more as a test of management virility.Yet without sound strategic analysis coupled with a careful review of management capacity, ventures abroad are highly risky and may represent poor value for shareholders. This paper returns to the fundamentals required for a methodical review of the merits of expansion by acquisition in unfamiliar territory. It concludes that it is important to marry the theoretical analysis with the most careful commercial review.     

An Evaluation of Alternative Safety Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants

Safety criteria for frequency of nuclear-reactor accidents and for reactor-induced risk to individuals and to society are evaluated on the basis of their comprehensiveness, clarity, recognition of uncertainty, practicability, defensibility, simplicity, and internal consistency. Many criteria were found to be comprehensive and practicable; few completely satisfied the other evaluation standards. A consensus inferred from the most favorably evaluated criteria would allow between 1.0time10^-4 and 1.0time10^-3 core melts per reactor year, between 1.0time10^-6 and 2.0time10^-5 fatalities per reactor year per individual, and a total exposure in the United States of between 1000 and 10,000 person rems per reactor year. This consensus is consistent with the criteria proposed in NUREG0880.

Death of a migrant: transnational death rituals and gender among British Sylhetis

In this article I discuss transnational burial rituals carried out in London and Sylhet. While collective identity and reaffirming social ties are important issues in discussing the burial of migrants in Sylhet, the main focus of the article is on gender. The analysis of what happens when Londonis die reveals a great deal about the differential effects of living between two places on men and women. While transnationalism may in some contexts be understood as potentially subversive, for the majority of Sylhetis in Britain movement between places is highly constrained by poverty and British immigration controls, as well as by particular gender and household relations. These in turn impact on men and women’s experiences of bereavement, as well as on their access to and relationship with the British state.     

Young people's gendered interpretations of suicide and attempted suicide

This paper aims to uncover gendered interpretations of various kinds of suicidal behaviour. Its empirical basis is focus group discussions with a range of young people, including users of social work services. In support of Canetto's research, the authors found some of the young people to be associating ‘successful’ suicides with masculinity and ‘failed’ suicide attempts with femininity. These feminized suicide attempts were subject to some fairly pejorative interpretations, such as being motivated by revenge or manipulation. There was no particular pattern of viewpoints in terms of the sex of respondents. The implications of these findings for social work are discussed.
