The Coping Response Indices developed by Billings and Moos (1984a) are frequently used in stress research in the social science
and clinical fields. These indices were originally developed in a clinical setting using a conceptual process rather than
psychometric methods. This study investigates the factorial structure of the Coping Response Indices scale using a nonclinical
sample. Principal components analysis with varimax rotation yields three distinct dimensions within the scale. Considerable
support is found for the conceptualization of the Coping Response Indices, as proposed by Billings and Moos. There is also
some indication, however, that the conceptualization and measurement of the indices need further revision and testing, especially
if they are to be used in social science research.
Her research interests include economic strain, stress and coping, and child functioning in diverse family structures. She
received her Ph.D. from Oregon State University.

This article aims to provide researchers interested in using Ryff’s Scales of Psychological Wellbeing with additional information
to make an informed decision on the scales and items to use. It builds on the discussion in the literature on the six factor
structure of this measure. An alternative shortened version of this wellbeing measure (Van Dierendonck 2004). Personality and Individual Differences, 36, 629–643) was analyzed in a combined Spanish language sample from Spain and Columbia. Using confirmatory factor analysis,
one-, two-, three- and six-factor models were compared. The results showed that indeed four out the six dimensions overlapped
considerably. Nevertheless, the model that fit the data best was the six factor model with one underlying second order well-being

The so-called doctrinal paradox reveals that a jury that decides by majority on the truth of a set of propositions, may come
to a conclusion that is at odds with a legal doctrine to which they all subscribe. The doctrinal paradox, and its subsequent
generalization by List and Pettit (Econ Philos 18:89–110, 2002), reveal the logical difficulties of epistemic democracy. This
paper presents several generalizations of the paradox that are formulated with the use of many-valued logic. The results show
that allowing the individual or the collective judgements to be formulated in terms of degrees of beliefs does not ensure

A modification of optimal control for an economy under uncertainty, by splitting the technique into a simulation phase and a control phase, makes policy optimization feasible for large-scale nonlinear models. The advantages of this approach in a policy search are clearly illustrated by an application to Dutch economic planning. A historical analysis shows that it is important to treat unemployment and the balance of payments as the key targets.
