Despite increasing geographic mobility among academic staff, gendered patterns of involvement in academic mobility have largely escaped scrutiny. Positioned within literatures on internationalization, physical proximity, gender and parenthood in academic mobility and understandings of gender as a process enacted through both discursive and embodied practices, we use discourse analysis based on interviews with academics in New Zealand to examine differences in language that create differing realities with regards to gender and obligations of care in academic mobility decisions. The findings reveal how academic mobility is discursively formulated as ‘essential’ to successful academic careers, with the need for frequent travel justified despite advances in virtual communication technologies. Heteronormative discourses are shown to disrupt and fragment the opportunities female academics have to engage in academic mobility. However, we also uncover ways in which these discourses are resisted, wherein fathers articulate emotional strain associated with academic mobility. The article shows how discourse works to constitute the essentialization of academic mobility, and the uneven gendered practices associated with it, whilst also giving voice to gender inequities in academic mobility from the southern hemisphere. 相似文献

In this article, recent research literature on bullying in schools is discussed. The authors approach the discussion from a critical angle, distinguishing between first‐order perspectives (bullying as part of individuals’ dysfunction) and second‐order perspectives (bullying as part of social processes) to embrace the different understandings of bullying and to discuss these critically. The purpose is to present important knowledge to reduce bullying and to engage in a discussion of different perspectives on bullying. In recent years, residential postsecondary schools have been created to help adults who have completed high school, but need more assistance to make the transition to college or a career. The purpose of this study is to understand the subjective experiences of students at one such facility. Using qualitative methodology, 16 adult students were interviewed to identify areas in which they have made progress toward their goal of living independently. Students acknowledged gains in the areas of social and emotional growth, employment training, academic achievement, and independent living skill development. The results suggest that a residential postsecondary intervention is beneficial for adults with learning disabilities. 相似文献

The origin of homosexuality has been the subject of systematic study in many disciplines during the previous century. In the
social science literature, two general models concerning the etiology of homosexuality have emerged, the essentialist model
and the constructionist model. This article reviews these two models and provides empirical data on their relative support.
Support for each model has been gauged by assessing the opinions of sociologists. Data was obtained from a random sample of
sociologists teaching in colleges and universities throughout the United States. The major finding is that the majority of

This paper briefly and informally surveys different theoretical models of relative concerns and their relation to inequality.
Models of inequity aversion in common use in experimental economics imply a negative relation between inequality and happiness.
In contrast, empirical studies on happiness typically employ models of relative concerns that assume that increases in others’
income always have a negative effect on own happiness. However, in these latter models, the relation between inequality and
happiness can be positive. One possible solution is a rivalry model where a distinction is made between endowment and reward
inequality which have respectively a negative and positive effect on happiness. These different models and their contrasting
results may clarify why the empirical relationship between inequality and happiness has been difficult to establish.

This paper seeks to contribute toward anintegrated approach to social movement mobilization. Itdoes so through considering how a social psychologicalaccount of the determination of collective behavior (self-categorization theory) may be applied tothe mobilization rhetoric of social movements. Abstract Maintaining fiscal solvency at the University of Rochester Health and Safety Division necessitates increased attention to income sources. Prepaid student fees and university funds are not increasing as rapidly as expenses. In order to maintain services, additional income must be sought from other areas such as expansion of the number of subscribers, increased fee-for-service patients, and increased third party collections. Continued review of expenses in terms of necessity, effectiveness, efficiency, and priority is required. Through the use of a computerized data information system, resource utilization can be explored and reviewed with timeliness and accuracy. Full utilization of the university's accounting capabilities helps to segregate expenses easily and reallocate them to cost centers for purposes of accountability and review. Systems analysis of patient and paper flow can eliminate unnecessary tasks and reduce time required for other functions. The role of the Student Advisory Committee in reviewing expenses and revenue provides valuable input to recommendations for fee increases as well as to expense increases or reductions resulting in changes of services to subscribers. Continual administrative and financial controls and reviews are necessary as financial resources become more scarce relative to the financial demands being made. 相似文献

Racial identity is one of the primary means by which immigrants assimilate to the United States. Drawing from the tenets of segmented assimilation, this study examines how the ethnic traits of immigrant status, national origin, religious affiliation, and Arab Americaness contribute to the announcement of a white racial identity using a regionally representative sample of Arab Americans. Results illustrate that those who were Lebanese/Syrian or Christian, and those who felt that the term “Arab American” does not describe them, were more likely to identify as white. In addition, among those who affirmed that the pan‐ethnic term “Arab American” does describe them, results illustrated that strongly held feelings about being Arab American and associated actions were also linked with a higher likelihood of identifying as white. Findings point to different patterns of assimilation among Arab Americans. Some segments of Arab Americans appear to report both strong ethnic and white identities, while others report a strong white identity, yet distance themselves from the pan‐ethnic “Arab American” label. 相似文献

Widespread concern developed in the 1980s in Australia about repetition injuries among keyboard operators, particularly in the Australian Public Service. Government departments were found to vary in their injury rates and this research seeks to explain the variation. It is hypothesized that it is associated with differences in job stress or, more generally, the quality of work. A survey was carried out, using the Insel and Moo Work Environment Scale and certain other job stress variables and the hypothesis was confirmed. The paper draws conclusions about the need to redesign jobs in order to reduce the risk of repetition injuries. 相似文献
