Abuse and Neglect Experienced by Aging Chinese in Canada

The traditional values of Chinese culture promote care and respect toward older adults. While it appears to be ironic to discuss issues of abuse and neglect in the Chinese culture, research findings in Chinese societies do indicate the occurrences of such problems. However, little research on the abuse and neglect of older Chinese in Western societies has been available. This study aims to examine the incidence of abuse and neglect and the associated correlates based on data collected from a random sample of 2,272 aging Chinese 55 years and older in seven Canadian cities. The findings show that 4.5% of the participants reported experiencing at least one incident of maltreatment or neglect within the past year. The most common forms of neglect and abuse experienced by the aging Chinese include being scolded, yelled at, treated impolitely all the time, and ridiculed. Close family members such as spouses and sons are those that most commonly maltreat older Chinese. Those who were more likely to report at least one incident of maltreatment or neglect were older adults living with others; they tended to have no education, more access barriers, more chronic illnesses, less favorable mental health, and a higher level of identification with Chinese cultural values. The findings implied that the face value of respect and care received by older people in Chinese culture should not be taken for granted. Culturally appropriate precautionary steps are needed for prevention and early problem identification.     

A Case of Sexual Abuse by a Traditional Faith Healer: Are There Potential Preventions?

Adolescent sexual abuse is not an uncommon phenomenon in Malaysia. It is a traumatic experience that complicates the psychosocial development of young people on the threshold of adulthood. This case report highlights the psychosocial sequelae of adolescent sexual abuse by a traditional healer and discusses management issues in the context of unique cultural and belief systems.     

欠发达民族地区金融发展对产业结构的影响——基于临夏回族自治州的实证分析

欠发达民族地区产业结构的调整离不开金融发展的支持。在对国内外文献进行简要评述的基础上,本文以甘肃省具有代表性的欠发达民族地区临夏回族自治州作为研究对象,运用1990—2011年相关统计数据,对其金融发展与产业结构之间的关系进行了实证分析。相关回归结果表明：金融发展水平对产业结构的影响最大,并且这种影响是最为明显的。同时,金融参与率和产业结构自身变化对产业结构调整的影响也较为显著。     

Service Barriers of Chinese Family Caregivers in Canada

ABSTRACT

Family caregiving is a stressful process, especially when the complexity of being an immigrant or ethnic minority is added. This paper examined service barriers experienced by Chinese immigrant family caregivers in Canada and the predictors of different types of barriers. Principle component analysis was performed with the barriers reported loading onto cultural barriers, administrative problems, circumstantial challenges, perceived negative quality of services, and personal attitudes. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify the role of the culture-related factors in predicting service barriers, controlling for socio-demographic status of the caregivers'. The results show that financial factors significantly predicted the number and types of barriers reported by the caregivers. Culture-related factors were significant in predicting the total number of access barriers and the different types of barriers experienced by the family caregivers. The findings indicate the importance of culturally sensitive support for family caregivers in order to reduce the access barriers.

Un análisis de la relación entre ambiente familiar y delincuencia juvenil

Resumen

En este trabajo se analiza la relación entre las interacciones afectivas y normativas del ambiente familiar, y la conducta delictiva de los adolescentes varones. La muestra del estudio estaba compuesta por tres grupos de adolescentes: no delincuentes, delincuentes no detectados y delincuentes detectados (institucionalizados). Los resultados de los análisis realizados ponen de manifiesto la existencia de diferencias significativas entre las características familiares de delincuentes y no delincuentes. Concretamente, los datos del estudio permiten afirmar que: 1) las variables afectivas parecen más importantes que las referidas a los aspectos normativos para discriminar entre los grupos de sujetos, y 2) entre las variables afectivas serían el apego del hijo hacia los padres y el conflicto familiar las que aparecen como especialmente relevantes para discriminar entre delincuentes y no delincuentes, asociándose un alto nivel de apego/bajo nivel de conflicto con no delincuencia, y un bajo nivel de apego/alto nivel de conflicto con delincuencia.     

Methodological issues when analysing the role of physical activity in gastric cancer prevention: a critical review

The beneficial effect of physical activity (PA) has been confirmed in several types of cancer (especially colon and breast tumours). However, the role of PA as a risk factor directly related to the incidence of gastric cancer is still open to doubt. This is in part due to the fact that most studies have not considered gastric sub-site or histology of oesophageal cancer, as well as the different approaches used in order to measure PA. Indeed, some studies have tried to link gastric cancer to PA intensity and timing, whereas others have focused on a specific PA type such as recreational, occupational or sporting activity. Furthermore, most of them do not use validated questionnaires, and others create a PA index and employ different unit measures (metabolic equivalents, hours/week, times per week, etc.), which makes it difficult to compare its findings. Under these circumstances, this brief critical review aims to explore and show all the methodological issues that need to be taken into account in order to objectify the link between PA and gastric cancer, as well as provide alternative solutions to these matters.
