Victim Evaluations of Face-to-Face Restorative Justice Conferences: A Quasi-Experimental Analysis

One major goal of face-to-face restorative justice (RJ) is to help heal the psychological harm suffered by crime victims ( Braithwaite, 2002 ). Substantial evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has shown that this can be accomplished ( Strang, 2002 ) and more trials are underway ( Sherman & Strang, 2004 ). These outcomes are even more clearly, if less rigorously, demonstrated through retrospective interviews of victims about their feelings before and after RJ took place. We review the responses of victims ( N = 210) who participated in trials in Canberra (Australia) and in London, Thames Valley, and Northumbria (UK). Despite substantial variations in offense types, social contexts, nation and race, before-after changes revealed by qualitative and quantitative data are all in the same beneficial direction.     

The power and pay of international union officials

Secondary data are used to examine the relationship between the power of international union presidents and their pay. The analysis supported the hypotheses that (1) power and pay were positively related and (2) the relationship is more pronounced in unions that are larger and are less effective in bargaining as well as during periods characterized by conflict over the president’s role. While highlighting the political dimensions of union organizations, the data also support previous studies that found international union officers’ salaries to have a “rational” basis in the union’s bargaining effectiveness. Financial management in stepfamilies

This study is an investigation of the financial management practices of 105 remarried couples who have at least one child from a previous marriage. The majority of the couples pool their financial resources and share equally in decisions made about their finances. Financial management practices tend to be different from those of prior marriages. Remarried women experience more changes than remarried men. In general, remarried people are satisfied with how they are handling their finances. The data from this study partially supports Fishman's hypothesis that remarried families who pool resources are closer. Marital relationships are not affected by the method of pooling, but adult-child relationships are closer when resources are pooled than when they are not.This study was funded by the University of Missouri Weldon Springs Research Fund.Marilyn Coleman is Professor and Chair of Human Development and Family Studies, 28 Stanley Hall, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211. Family Therapy by a Husband-Wife Team*

Marital and family therapy has traditionally been carried out by a solo therapist or colleaguel co-therapists. Theoretical and clinical advantages and potential difficulties of a husband-wife team will be discussed and comparisons made to the colleaguel co-therapy model. Phases in the development of a husband-wife therapy team and illustrative clinical vignettes will be presented.     

Exponential Parameter Estimation for Data Sets Containing Left and Right Censored Observations

Lifetime data sets may contain both left and right censored observations. Regression, maximum likelihood, and the best iinear unbiased parameter estimates are given for the exponential distribution, along with a comparison of the estimators.     

Testing for homogeneity in cross-lagged panel studies

Panel studies are statistical studies in which two or more variables are observed for two or more subjects at two or more points In time. Cross- lagged panel studies are those studies in which the variables are continuous and divide naturally into two effects or impacts of each set of variables on the other. If a regression approach is taken5 a regression structure Is formulated for the cross-lagged models This structure may assume that the regression parameters are homogeneous across waves and across subpopulations. Under such assumptions the methods of multivariate regression analysis can be adapted to make inferences about the parameters. These inferences are limited to the degree that homogeneity of the parameters Is 'supported b}T the data. We consider the problem of testing the hypotheses of homogeneity and consider the problem of making statistical inferences about the cross-effects should there be evidence against one of the homogeneity assumptions. We demonstrate the methods developed by applying then to two panel data sets.
