ABSTRACTDrug courts have been a key part of the criminal justice system since 1989, and this study contributes to the existing body of research by identifying which participants (n = 248) were most likely to graduate from a drug court in Indiana (United States). Three variables emerged as significant predictors of graduation. First, participants who were employed or were students at the time of admission were nearly 2.5 times more likely to graduate than participants who were not. Second, participants who were using opiates as their primary drug of choice were over 80% less likely to graduate than participants who were using non-opiates as their primary drug of choice. Third, participants who had violations in the first 30 days of the program were nearly 50% less likely to graduate than participants who did not violate in the first 30 days. Offering medication-assisted treatment (MAT), such as methadone, Suboxone, or Vivitrol, to participants who have an opiate use disorder may improve graduation rates for this population. Additionally, graduation rates may also improve by offering more resources to assist participants in gaining and maintaining employment or schooling, and this seems to be especially important within the first month of the program. 相似文献

A paper published by one of the authors (Woodward and Squires, 1996), described a situation where the accounting information system used by a geographically‐remote project manager to report progress on a project to his headquarters proved inadequate for that task. The inadequacy was particularly relevant in the reported case, in that the object project was one of considerable significance to the company, being the largest and most complex it had ever undertaken. While the earlier paper concentrated initially upon identifying the perceived shortcomings in the organization’s accounting information system, and subsequently upon delineating the proposal for a ‘workable’ solution thereto, the purpose of the present paper is rather to analyse the situation earlier reported, in the context of a perceived breakdown in the trust relationship existing between the project manager and his superior, the company’s managing director. The managing director trusted his subordinate, although it seems apparent retrospectively that the trusting relationship existing was abused. While the underpinning precept of trust is thus fundamental to the present analysis, it is additionally necessary to utilize as relevant concepts: the veracity of the company’s control mechanism (via the concept of action at a distance) to adequately report what was happening remote from headquarters; the assumption that the project manager, as agent, had the potential to abuse his position; and, finally, that the project manager’s professional affiliation was probably insufficiently strong to sustain self‐control based upon ‘clan’ considerations. It also emerges from the analysis that multiple, rather than single, trust relationships were at work. 相似文献

This article explores the importance of history context to the cultural humility of the social work profession. Four graduate student reflections on history context using simplified cultural history method are used to illustrate how important it is to take a critical approach to social work policy and macro practice history. An important element of cultural humility is becoming conscious of social work blind spots on an interpersonal and professional level. Social workers have been involved in institutional practices in the past that are now considered insensitive to cultural difference. The profession has, at times, supported practices of discrimination. Thoughtful history analysis allows social work students and educators to begin to reveal blindness in the past that could help provide insight into current implicit bias and unintentional injustice. 相似文献

Drawing on two recently completed ethnographic studies of young women in the West Midlands, this paper explores a series of issues about the application of feminist principles and practice to such research. One study analysed young women's friendships, mainly through participant observation in school, supplemented by participation at a youth club. The other explored the likely success of the former Conservative Government's ‘Health of the Nation's’ targets for aspects of young women's health, through extended attendance at two youth clubs, supplemented by ‘shadowing’ informants at school. Both studies also used interviews, diaries and other data sources. Driven by the researchers' desire to ‘give a voice’ to their informants, this paper reviews power relationships in the production of knowledge; issues about self-presentation; securing access to and winning the trust of the young women; and their resolution of some of the ethical dilemmas which confronted the researchers in the course of their fieldwork. 相似文献

Inglehart applies a four item ranking scale to measure post-materialism which is used for cross-cultural and cross-temporal comparative purposes. The aim of this research is to test measurement invariance of the scale to establish to what extent the scale produces comparable results in time and between countries. We use Eurobarometer data to test longitudinal comparability for ten countries (France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, West-Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Ireland, Great Britain and North Ireland) over a period of 20 years (1976–1997). With the exception of Denmark the within-country longitudinal comparisons indicate that measurement invariance is a tenable assumption. However, the findings of the cross-cultural analyses indicate that the meaning assigned to the four items differs slightly between countries, indicating a lack of comparability of the average level of post-materialism between countries. Findings also suggest that a lack of unidimensionality of the scale might cause this incomparability. 相似文献

Current work has yielded differential findings regarding infants' ability to perceptually detect the causal structure of a means‐end support sequence. Resolving this debate has important implications for perception‐action dissociations in this domain of object knowledge. In Study 1, 12‐month‐old infants' ability to perceive the causal structure of a cloth‐pulling sequence was assessed via a habituation paradigm. After seeing an event in which a supported toy was moved by pulling a cloth that it sat on, 12‐month‐old infants demonstrated longer looking to events that violated the causal structure of this sequence than to events that preserved the causal structure but varied other perceptual features of the event. Studies 2 and 3 investigated 10‐month‐olds' interpretations of means‐end support sequences using both a habituation paradigm and a task that assessed infants' own means‐end actions. Whereas 10‐month‐olds failed to demonstrate an understanding of the causal structure when tested using a flat cloth as the support (Study 2), sensitivity to this structure was apparent when a rectangular box was the support. These patterns were evident in both action and perception (Study 3). Moreover, individual variation in action task performance was related to visual habituation performance. The results are discussed with respect to the relation between action and perception in infancy. 相似文献

This study used data from the National Survey of American Life to investigate the use of professional services and informal
support among African Americans, black Caribbeans, and non-Hispanic whites. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine
the association of race and perceived discrimination with the use of professional services only, informal support only, both
professional services and informal support, or no help at all. Fifty-one percent of the sample used both professional services
and informal support, 16% relied on professional services only, 20% used informal support only, and 13% did not seek help.
Before controlling for other factors, African Americans and black Caribbeans were significantly less likely to receive either
professional or informal help compared with whites. When everyday racial discrimination was included, racial differences in
not seeking help were no longer significant. Household income also influenced the relationship between race and help-seeking.
Other factors significantly associated with help-seeking include age, gender, education, employment status, insurance coverage,
type and severity of disorder, and subjective closeness to family and friends. The association of these factors and implication
of the findings for future research and mental health service delivery will be discussed. 相似文献
