This article reports some relevant results from a recent survey of the corporate planning practices of a number of leading British organizations. The sample spanned turnovers from £2000m. Within this range, the functional areas involved show considerable variation: for example, 95% of companies perform financial planning, but only 52% production planning. Organization too, quite naturally, displays great variety: thus one company operates with only a single planner whereas another employs thirty. Ratings are quoted for the main advantages and disadvantages of corporate planning as assessed by the chief executives; in general, the benefits dominate.  相似文献

Research has shown a connection between being a college sports fan and binge drinking; however, no research uses criminological theories when examining this connection. The purpose of the present study is to examine the ability of self-control and differential association theories to determine whether the relationship between college sports fans and binge drinking is individual or group situated. Using self-report data from (n = 693) college students from four southern universities, the results show that the connection between being a college sports fan and binge drinking can be accounted for by both low self-control and differential association. These results are discussed and policy implications are presented.  相似文献

In the current study, the attitudes, behaviors and experiences of 26 gay or bisexual men who were married to a woman are examined. Data are provided on childhood family background and experiences, sexual practices with men, reasons for entering marriage, and the "coming out" process. The frequency of childhood sexual experiences was associated with unsafe sexual practices with other men in adulthood. Attitudes toward lesbians and gay men were more negative now than at the time of marriage. The two most frequent reasons for marriage were that it seemed natural, and a desire for children and family life. The results support the hypothesis that internalised homophobia is a factor that leads men into mixed-orientation marriages. Cognitive consistency theory is used to explain the eventual marriage breakdown.  相似文献

Popular accounts of science have helped to stimulate greater public interest in the role of science in contemporary society. For example, chaos theory and complexity theory have proven to be highly marketable science "products". These concepts have increasingly travelled into wider culture and, notably, the study of organization. Through an interpretation that promotes a leaning towards uncertainty, unpredictability and ambiguity, these accounts of science have been seen to provoke a (postmodern) re-conceptualisation of our view of the world. Indeed the overtly philosophical style of many of these stories has provided a rich source of material for social scientists seeking to explain and legitimise developments in organization and cultural studies. Concentrating upon the treatment of chaos theory as a "postmodern science", this paper examines and questions the historical and cultural influences that have encouraged the appropriation of theories from the natural science.  相似文献

An improved climate for long-range planning, a better understanding of divergent viewpoints among planning participants and increased satisfaction with planning systems do not automatically occur with more experience in planning. Learning to cope with planning problems requires a continuing investment of management time and energy. Many of the companies included in this study were willing to make this investment—progress has been slow and more needs to be done. This speculative essay examines ‘invisible’ social identities and the processes by which they are manifested and occasionally sought. Using various literary and academic sources, and loosely informed by an unlikely combination of Stoic philosophy and post-structuralist politics, we argue that invisibility is conventionally viewed as undesirable or ‘suffered’ by individuals or groups that are disadvantaged or marginalised within society. Whilst appreciating this possibility, we argue that social invisibility can also be the result of strategies carefully conceived and consciously pursued. We suggest that forms of social invisibility can be acquired by ethically informed personal action as well as by politically informed collective action. In this context, invisibility can be seen as a strategy of escaping from institutionalised and organisational judgements and which presents a challenge to common notions of voice and identity.  相似文献

Strategic credibility has to do with how favourably key stakeholders view the strategic foundations of the firm. Does the company have a solid strategic capability? Is corporate strategy responsive to emerging opportunities, organizational goals and resources? Does the company have an effective strategic planning process? To be able to answer these questions affirmatively is important. To be able to convince key stakeholders that outstanding corporate performance is planned rather than accidental is even more significant. The company that utilizes corporate communication to create and sustain a positive strategic image is well on its way to achieving strategic credibility. A record of strategic effectiveness, when skillfully articulated to company stakeholders, can pay off in improved relations with the financial community, stockholders and company employees.  相似文献
