Calder, Child Protection Unit, Salford Social Services Department, Avon House, Avon Close, Little Hulton, Manchester M38 OLA Summary There have been a great many protracted and heated debates aboutthe practice of state intervention and control of family lifein recent years. Indeed, the Children Act (1989) was draftedafter the Cleveland Inquiry highlighted the lack of consulationwith parents and the lasting effects of ill-considered intrusioninto family life, and embraced the philosophy of partnership.Social workers operating in the child care and child protectionareas need to balance the contradictory notions of paternalismand partnership, in the knowledge that they will be pilloriedby the popular press when they get it wrong. This paper attemptsto contrast the two concepts in their philosophical and socialwork contexts, and moves on to recommend frameworks for helpingto balance them when they are operationalized. It is essentialto consider this particular debate in the wider political andeconomic contexts, particularly where uncertainty and the lackof resources are ever-present features.  相似文献

Positive psychologists aspire to study the moral virtues, as well as positive emotions, while retaining scientific objectivity. Within this framework, Martin Seligman, a founder of positive psychology, offers an empirically‐based argument for an ancient and venerable theme: happiness can be increased by exercising the virtues. Seligman's project is promising, but it needs to pay greater attention to several methodological matters: (1) greater care in defining happiness, so as to avoid smuggling in value assumptions of the sort suggested by the title of his book, Authentic Happiness; (2) more attention to the gap between happiness as overall satisfaction and specific gratifications (enjoyments); (3) the danger of sliding to subjectivism by equating self‐assessments of virtue with objectively‐justified values of the sort Aristotle had in mind; (4) awareness of how “positive” emotions and attitudes presuppose value assumptions.  相似文献

Abstract.  The performance of multivariate kernel density estimates depends crucially on the choice of bandwidth matrix, but progress towards developing good bandwidth matrix selectors has been relatively slow. In particular, previous studies of cross-validation (CV) methods have been restricted to biased and unbiased CV selection of diagonal bandwidth matrices. However, for certain types of target density the use of full (i.e. unconstrained) bandwidth matrices offers the potential for significantly improved density estimation. In this paper, we generalize earlier work from diagonal to full bandwidth matrices, and develop a smooth cross-validation (SCV) methodology for multivariate data. We consider optimization of the SCV technique with respect to a pilot bandwidth matrix. All the CV methods are studied using asymptotic analysis, simulation experiments and real data analysis. The results suggest that SCV for full bandwidth matrices is the most reliable of the CV methods. We also observe that experience from the univariate setting can sometimes be a misleading guide for understanding bandwidth selection in the multivariate case.  相似文献

The study “Psychoanalysis—its image and its public” intimates that common sense is increasingly informed by science. But common sense asserts its autonomy and, in turn, may affect the trajectory of science. This is a process that leads to many differentiations—in common sense, in scientific innovation and in political and regulatory structures. Bauer and Gaskell's toblerone model of triangles of mediation provided a distillation of their reading of “La Psychanalyse.” Here it was argued that representations are multi‐modal phenomena necessitating the use of multiple methodologies (comparative and longitudinal; qualitative and quantitative). In this paper we briefly summarise these arguments and elaborate ways in which social representation theory can be considered a progressive research programme. “Progressive” because as the theory has developed it has extended the range and depth of its conceptual basis; it provides a new synthesis for the social scientific understanding of the phenomena of common sense and of representation; it acts as an antidote to the reductionism of public opinion and, finally, it is a stimulus to depart from disciplinary silos. However, there remain unresolved issues: how to segment the relevant social milieus and how to close the feedback loop from common sense to science?  相似文献

SUMMARY. nderstanding inter-personal communication is no easy task and seems particularly uncertain when adults are talking to children. The authors set out to identify how children perceive what adults say to them by seeking to understand the nature of children's knowledge about adults in general. A study of 300 children, aged 4–14 was carried out to ascertain the types of response children gave at different ages to a standard set of questions in conversation. The authors conclude that as children grow older they move from anecdotal, through physical and social, to psychological responses. They conclude this greater understanding of the way children, in particular adolescents, perceive adults could have a very positive effect on professional relationships with young people  相似文献

Comparison of the findings from a 1979 sample of faculty membersof the honorific academies and a 1977 national survey of Americanprofessors indicates that the former are more liberal politicallythan the latter, including those at the most distinguished institutions.This result is in line with a body of theory which suggeststhat intellectual creativity is associated with critical socialviews, and with earlier research which found that scholarlystatus among faculty generally is correlated with liberal politicalorientations.
