A positive psychology intervention to foster economic integration of Syrian refugees in the Netherlands

Research shows that the labour market integration of refugees is often problematic. Little is known about what kind of measures are effective to help them integrate into the labour market. In the Netherlands, a positive psychology intervention “Mosaic” for Syrian refugees was developed to support their economic participation. This study aims to assess the effect of “Mosaic” on the economic participation and work-related attitudes of Syrian refugees. “Mosaic” was implemented in six municipalities by conducting an RCT with a waiting list control group. The results show that in the short term, the intervention group realizes a significantly larger increase in hours spent on an internship as well as substantially larger gains in confidence to find work in the future. In the long term, the intervention group experiences larger confidence gains related to finding a job that fits their education and experience.     

A note on simplicial depth function

We investigate the behaviour of simplicial depth under the perturbation (1−ε)F+ε δ _z , where F is a p-dimensional probability distribution and δ _z is the point-mass distribution concentrated at the point z. The influence function of simplicial depth at the point x, up to a scalar multiplier, turns out to be the difference between the conditional depth, given that one of the vertices of the random simplex is fixed at the position z, and the unconditional depth. The scalar multiplier is p+1, which suggests that simplicial depth can be more sensitive to perturbations as the dimensionality grows higher. The geometrical properties of the influence function give new insight into the observed behaviour of simplicial depth and its relation with halfspace depth. The behaviour of the perturbed simplicial median is also investigated.     

Wage Flexibility for Skilled and Unskilled Workers: New Evidence on the Norwegian Wage Curve

Empirical evidence is provided in favour of a hypothesis that wages for unskilled workers are more responsive to unemployment than wages for skilled workers. The results imply vigorous wage responsiveness to low levels of unemployment for both groups, while the wage curves become almost entirely flat for unemployment rates above 1.7 percent. One interpretation of this result is that firms have strong incentives to increase wages in order to recruit and retain workers when unemployment is below some critical level. Since unemployed workers will certainly find work, the expected costs of a job loss are small, as are costs associated with an egalitarian wage policy.     

Is Arbitration Habit Forming? The Narcotic Effect of Arbitration Use

This paper explores the existence of structural state dependence in arbitration use where it is legally mandated to resolve labor–management bargaining disputes. Previous studies have found both positive state dependence (the narcotic effect) and negative state dependence. This paper reports a negative state dependence for the Minnesota public sector during the period 1973 to 1980. A weak positive trend in arbitration probabilities and a positive relationship between current arbitration probabilities and the proportion of bargainers engaging in arbitration during the same calendar year are also found. An analysis of the dynamic implications of these findings does not support fears that compulsory arbitration schemes are unstable or lead to arbitration as the dominant settlement mode.
