Abstract

This article examines models of addiction and heroin treatment outcomes as well as the history of xenophobia, racial scapegoating, and misinformation in the promotion of narcotics prohibition in the United States. The moral model of addiction holds that punishment of the addict will be effective deterrence, yet punishment has not prevented heroin use, and narcotics control costs continue to spiral. The medical model of addiction, the dominant philosophical underpinning for current treatment methods, is shown to lack scientific corrobora‐tion and therefore to be inappropriate as a basis for policy on heroin use and inadequate to govern options in heroin addiction treatment. The discouraging outcomes of all modes of heroin addiction treatment indicate that treatment will not end the demand for the drug. Gradual legalization of heroin, while instituting formal and informal social structures geared to controlled use, is recommended.     

The Funny Business of Being Tina Fey: Constructing a (feminist) comedy icon

Since her appointment as head writer on Saturday Night Live in the fall of 1999, Tina Fey has enjoyed unprecedented success as a writer, creator, and performer, in a genre notorious for favoring male-oriented fare and its attendant male writers and performers. The press surrounding her various film, television, and literary projects provides a unique opportunity to consider how Fey has worked with reporters to construct her public reputation as a successful woman working in comedy. Based on a Lexis-Nexis search of major English-language newspapers worldwide dating from Fey's appointment as head writer on Saturday Night Live in September 1999 through to the release of her best-selling book Bossypants in April 2011, this analysis finds that Fey employs a complex mix of self-deprecating and somewhat aggressive humor to answer reporter questions about topics ranging from her personal grooming habits and myriad talents to the treatment of women in the male-dominated business of comedy.     

Mariners' Museum and Library

The Mariners' Museum and Library, begun in 1930 in southeastern Virginia, is world renowned for its collections of maritime ephemera. Collections include ships, boat plans, figureheads, navigational instruments, rare maps, books, and a wonderful collection of serials. Both the museum and library are used by scholars, ship builders, students, and television and movie researchers. It is also a great place for a family to spend the day learning and playing. The library's interactive Web site, with online exhibits and educational programs, is a fantastic resource for those who are not able to travel to the museum.     

Behavior Analytic Concepts and Change in a Large Metropolitan Research University: The Graduation Success Initiative

The Graduation Success Initiative is a complex, organization-wide application of behavior analytic concepts to improving undergraduate student retention and on-time graduation at a large metropolitan research university. The behavior analytic concepts discussed here include culture, supraorganismic phenomena, selecting environments, macrobehaviors, macrocontingencies, interlocking behavioral contingencies, metacontingencies, and rule-governed behavior. We introduce a change template that includes all pertinent agents in the university system and that focuses change efforts specifically on desired behaviors, targeted behaviors, strategic interventions, and reinforcing contingencies for each of the categories of agents. The Graduation Success Initiative produced a 16-point increase in on-time graduation in 4 years.     

Perceived violence climate: A new construct and its relationship to workplace physical violence and verbal aggression,and their potential consequences

Abstract

Workplace accidents and violence are both potential sources of employee injuries that have been dealt with in entirely separate literatures. In this study we adapted the concept of safety climate from the accident/injury literature to violence in developing the concept of perceived violence climate. A scale was developed to assess perceived violence climate, including items about management attention, concern, and policies designed to keep employees safe from violence. Data were collected from a sample of 198 nurses from a US Hospital. Perceived violence climate was found to correlate significantly with both physical violence and verbal aggression experienced by the nurses, injury from violence, and perceptions of workplace danger. Furthermore, regression analyses showed that climate explained additional variance in psychological strain and perceptions of danger over experienced violence. These results have implications for interventions aimed at producing a good perceived violence climate in order to reduce the incidence of violence and aggression within an organization.     

Information and Efficiency in Tender Offers

We analyze tender offers where privately informed shareholders are uncertain about the raider's ability to improve firm value. The raider suffers a “lemons problem” in that, for any price offered, only shareholders who are relatively pessimistic about the value of the firm tender their shares. Consequently, the raider finds it too costly to induce shareholders to tender when their information is positive. In the limit as the number of shareholders gets arbitrarily large, when private benefits are relatively low, the tender offer is unsuccessful if the takeover has the potential to create value. The takeover market is therefore inefficient. In contrast, when private benefits of control are high, the tender offer allocates the firm to any value‐increasing raider, but may also allow inefficient takeovers to occur. Unlike the case where all information is symmetric, shareholders cannot always extract the entire surplus from the acquisition.
