The estimation and simulation of variable developmental period, with application to the mosquitoAedes aegypti (L.)

Summary The variability of stage developmental period may be a seminal feature of some insect populations and therefore of importance in management studies. A transfer function technique is described for estimating the frequency distribution of developmental period and simulating the subsequent population dynamics. The technique relates recruitment time series of consecutive stages by an age-specific developmental success function. Approximate statistics, such as the mean, median or mode developmental period, may be determined and the effect of different temperature or density regimes compared.     

Singular causal explanations

Singular causal explanations cite explicitly, or may be paraphrased to cite explicitly, a particular factor as the cause of another particular factor. During recent years there has emerged a consensus account of the nature of an important feature of such explanations, the distinction between a factor regarded correctly in a given context of inquiry as the cause of a given result and those other causally relevant factors, sometimes called mere conditions, which are not regarded correctly in that context of inquiry as the cause of that result. In this paper that consensus account is characterized and developed. The developed version is then used to illuminate some recent discussions of singular causal explanations.Work on this paper was supported by a University of Maryland Faculty Research Award. Earlier versions were read at the University of Minnesota and at the 1971 Western Division meetings of the American Philosophical Association. Loss of mate—A third individuation process

Summary and Conclusions The concept of a third individuation process following the loss of a mate focuses on the structural psychological dynamics which may impede or foster a successful adaptation to such a loss. When adequate individuation has been impaired during adolescence, marriage may serve as an ego support which impedes further development. With the death of the mate, there exists the possibility of a third chance at individuation. This understanding of the underlying dynamics suggests a treatment focus with an emphasis upon structural rather than behavioral change. The bereaved mate must be helped to dissolve the tie to the internalized infantile object and so gain a more advanced level of separation-individuation.While this paper has focused on the loss of a mate through death, the concepts would seem to be equally applicable for some divorcees. For some, divorce may represent a self-initiated third individuation process.This paper was presented at the Spring 1975 Educational Institute of the New York Society for Clinical Social Work.     

Some recent contributions to a noneclectic approach

Of recent, there is a growing trend towards an eclecticism that leads to the use of interventions based upon an amalgam of techniques and naive assumptions about the curative power of relationships. As an alternative, the author reviews recent psychoanalytic studies that provide an in-depth understanding of developmental and interactional clinical processes. He concludes that for many of our clients supportive approaches are not helpful since they fail to deal with the internalized pathology that impedes growth. Case material is provided to illustrate that the appropriate management of the therapeutic situation provides an opportunity for meaningful structural change.     

Crisis intervention and social casework: Similarities and differences in problem-solving

Summary The similarities and differences between the traditional psychosocial approach to casework and that of crisis intervention have been discussed with the use of illustrative case material. It is important to recognize that while crisis intervention is justifiably subsumed under the generalist concept of social work theory and practice on the basis of their striking similarities, it is necessary for the sake of professional clarity to differentiate between the two forms of problem-solving treatment methodologies in terms of goals, process, and structure.
