Anne Sved Williams is a perinatal and infant psychiatrist, who was trained in family therapy at the Ackerman Family Institute in New York, in 1976–77. In 1979, she was one of two women (the late Eleanor Wertheim being the other) invited to join the original Editorial Board of this journal. She is Director of Helen Mayo House and Psychiatric Services to the Women's and Babies Division, Women's and Children's Hospital Adelaide. She is a Clinical Senior Lecturer, University of Adelaide. In speaking with Colin MacKenzie, she recalls her introduction to family therapy, her training, her decision to move away from repair work with parents needing help in parenting adolescent children, in order to start ‘at the beginning’ with the parents of infants. This article combines the literature on kin networks and racial disparities in asset ownership. Specifically, we examine the effects of kin characteristics—sibling poverty and parental poverty, education, and occupation—on financial account ownership and home ownership. We find that kin matter for these outcomes. Having a poor sibling and coming from a poor family are negatively associated with account and home ownership while mother's education has a positive effect. Separate analyses by race suggest that kin characteristics matter for both Blacks and Whites for account ownership, but for home ownership they are significant for Whites only. Racial differences in kin characteristics account for over half of the racial gap in account ownership, but are not important for understanding the racial gap in home ownership. The significant effects of extended family characteristics on socioeconomic well-being make a case for the inclusion of kin variables in the growing literature on wealth disparities among Blacks and Whites. 相似文献

Theoretical models of government formation in political science usually assume that the head of state is non-strategic. In
this paper, we analyze the power of an agenda setter who chooses the order in which players are recognized to form coalitions
in simple games. We characterize those sets of players which can be imposed in the equilibrium coalition and show that the
only decisive structures where the agenda setter can impose the presence of any minimal winning coalition are apex games,

Interviews with 48 informal caregivers to the elderly indicate that the concept of caregiver meaning can help explain why many caregivers persevere in their roles despite the stress involved. Several general themes of caregiver meaning were found: Gratification and Satisfaction with the caregiving role, a sense of Family Responsibility/Reciprocity, the Friendship and Company which caregiving provided, and a commitment to Doing What Needs to Be Done. Less frequently utilized themes were: having a Caring Personality, and experiencing Personal Growth and an Improved Relationship with the elder. These themes echo the complexity of caregiver meaning reported in the literature to date, and two related interpretations of that complexity are posited: that meaning has both an emotional and a cognitive component, and that there are two different dynamics operating—searching for meaning and finding meaning. 相似文献

We investigate how the presence and education of parents affect adolescents’ school attendance, work participation, and school attainment in Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Panama. Across the four countries, approximately 20% of adolescents live in single-mother families and 4% in single-father families. Adolescents who live in single-mother families have significantly lower school attendance and attainment than adolescents who live with both parents. However, the effects of living in a single-mother family are small relative to the effects of parents’ education. Adolescents who live in single-mother families are not more likely to work than adolescents in two-parent families. WOMEN SOCIOLOGISTS IN THE MIDWEST: A STATUS UPDATE 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this article, an earlier study of the status of academic women sociologists in the Midwest that was extended to 1984–1985 is discussed. Type of appointment, rank, and chairpersons, as well as position in a Ph.D. rather than an M.A. program were used in the study as indicators of employment status. Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) leadership positions and participation in the annual MSS meeting served as indicators of professional participation. The results show that gains in employment status for women slowed in the 1980s. Employment of women in sociology department positions, especially in full-time positions and higher ranks, continued to lag behind the proportion of women Ph.D.s in the field. Women were overrepresented in the secondary labor market of part-time employment. However, women are now almost as likely to be employed in Ph.D. as well as M.A. programs. While gains in employment status generally slowed, professional participation has accellerated in recent years. Possible explanations for the differential penetrability of the two realms are offered. The appropriateness of statistical parity as a standard for evaluating equality in academic employment also is discussed.
