Bayesian predictive analysis of the linear regression model with an edgeworth series prior distribution

In this paper we obtain the Bayes forecasts for the future observations on the dependent variable in the linear regression model when the regression coefficients have an Edgeworth series prior distribution. Furthermore, we consider the effect of departure from normality of the prior distribution of regression coefficients on the Bayes forecasts.     

Analysis of Job Satisfaction: The Case of Japanese Private Companies

The scope of economic theory expands if we consider that working provides people with both pecuniary compensation for its disutility and job satisfaction. This study empirically analyzes the job satisfaction of employees in Japanese private companies using a multivariate ordered probit model. In particular, we examine the effects of a big economic shock, such as the Lehman shock, on job satisfaction, as well as the effects of differences in gender and employment status. We estimate the model using a Bayesian analysis and a multivariate ordered probit model using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. We show that non‐pecuniary aspects of jobs play an important role in job satisfaction.     

BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF THE LINEAR REGRESSION MODEL WITH NON-NORMAL DISTURBANCES

This paper considers the Bayesian analysis of a linear regression model with identically independently distributed non-normal disturbances. The distribution of disturbances is approximated by an Edgeworth series distribution with cumulants, of order higher than fourth, negligible. The posterior distribution of the regression coefficients vector is obtained under the assumption of a g-prior distribution for the parameters of the model. The Bayes estimator and its Bayes risk of the estimator are derived under a quadratic loss structure.     

Interactional Synchrony in Conversations about Emotional Episodes: A Measurement by “the Between-Participants Pseudosynchrony Experimental Paradigm”

Interactional synchrony refers to the coordination of movements between individuals in both timing and form during interpersonal communication. Most previous studies in Western culture used a coding methodology and concluded that interactional synchrony occurred for positive episodes but not for negative episodes (e.g., Charny, E. J. (1966). Psychosomatic Medicine, 28, 305–315). In this study, we examined interactional synchrony using a between-participants pseudosynchrony experimental paradigm (Bernieri, F. J., & Rosenthal, R. (1991). In R. S. Feldman & B. Rime (Eds.), Fundamentals of nonverbal behavior (pp. 401–432). New York: Cambridge University Press). Sixty Japanese female university students viewed interaction clips and judged the level of perceived synchrony. The results show that interactional synchrony was perceived in negative episodes as well as in positive episodes. The degree of perceived synchrony was higher in positive episodes than in negative episodes.

Difficult Conversations in a School of Social Work: Exploring Student and Faculty Perceptions

Difficult conversations about isms, power, privilege, and oppression are an essential part of social work education, and they present unique challenges for students and faculty. The current study examined students’ and faculty’s perceptions of the safety of the classroom and the competence of the faculty in facilitating difficult conversations at a graduate school of social work in New York City. Student and faculty versions of a survey were distributed to both groups. Results indicated students rated the experience of having difficult conversations at the school significantly more negatively than the faculty did. The majority of respondents expressed the need for courses and training to be more fluent in having difficult conversations. Future directions are discussed based on the findings.     

Time use of married couples: Bayesian approach

ABSTRACT

The living hours data of individuals' time spent on daily activities are compositional and include many zeros because individuals do not pursue all activities every day. Thus, we should exercise caution in using such data for empirical analyses. The Bayesian method offers several advantages in analyzing compositional data. In this study, we analyze the time allocation of Japanese married couples using the Bayesian model. Based on the Bayes factors, we compare models that consider and do not consider the correlations between married couples' time use data. The model that considers the correlation shows superior performance. We show that the Bayesian method can adequately take into account the correlations of wives' and husbands' living hours, facilitating the calculation of partial effects that their activities' variables have on living hours. The partial effects of the model that considers the correlations between the couples' time use are easily calculated from the posterior results.     

Survival and strategy of small/micro firms

 There is no doubt that small firms have shown a great tenacity to survive despite many adverse influences. This is especially surprising in view of the apparently low profits and frequent failures. This paper aims to provide an empirical insight into the diverse problems and means of survival of small/micro firms. The research focused on the konnyaku industry, which predominantly is neither fast-growing nor prone to failure but, instead, has average performance and survival. The purpose of this article is to shed some light on the business alliances and competition in this industry in which members of a sanchi do not cooperate but compete against each other.
