Securitization vs the yearning for peace in the Israeli casino discourse

This study analyses the controversy in Israel in the years 1958–2003 surrounding the legitimacy of casino gambling, with particular focus on how it was affected by the operations of Casino Oasis in the Palestinian Authority territory between 1998 and 2000. An interpretative narrative analysis of debates in the Israeli Knesset (parliament) and in the local press reveals that, prior to the casino's opening, most of the arguments raised were similar to those seen elsewhere in the world, with opponents objecting on moral, religious and social grounds, and those in favour emphasizing its economic and tourism benefits. However, once Casino Oasis opened its doors, the controversy took on a character not seen anywhere else in this context – opponents raised concerns about terrorism, while proponents championed the casino as a promoter of peace and coexistence – reflecting a broader, more fundamental national debate within Israeli society over the country's physical boundaries.     

Stories About Child Sexual Abuse: Textual Analysis of Instruction Manuals in Israel

This paper overviews the socio-historical background underlying the construction of child abuse as a public issue in Israel, and analyzes one cultural product of this process—textbooks and manuals on child sexual abuse prevention. Analysis of the Israeli narratives reveals that they mimic American counterparts and address an ideal Jewish middle-class, ignoring other societal sectors. The narratives individualize and medicalize both victim and abuser. Focusing on stereotyped techniques for the individual’s survival and recovery, they avoid discussion of broader social and political power relations.     

社会工作介入与研究的新方法:影像发声法——以T村外来务工家庭的母亲形象项目为例

影像发声(Photovoice)作为参与式行动研究的新方法,通过组织参与者拍摄照片并进行讨论的方式来激发个人和社区的改变。在社会工作介入和研究中,同样可以运用此方法来进行社区需求的评估和开展以增能为目标的介入实践。本文结合上海市T村外来务工家庭的母亲形象项目,介绍了影像发声法在实际操作过程中的基本程序,并探讨了运用影像发声法的优点与局限性。希望影像发声这一新的方法能为我国社会工作研究和实务工作者提供更多的有用工具。     

Culture and context in Chinese field supervision: a case study from Shanghai

Supervision that provides supports helps students to develop intervention skills and forms a strong professional identity. Yet, the literature on supervision largely stems from Western countries. Less is known about supervisory relationships in countries such as China. This article presents a qualitative case study of three MSW students and two supervisors in Mainland China focusing on how the practice context and Chinese cultural norms intersect with student expectations over a 10-month period. Findings demonstrate important differences between student expectations for supervision and the reality of their experience. These differences are based in current realities but reinforced by cultural norms.     

Response to Dean Bardill

Increasing demands for the accountability of social work education necessitate better methods of program assessment. In the technique described here, tested by a BSW program in 1992 and 1993, a Program Assessment Committee was formed to evaluate the collective work of randomly chosen seniors on three assignments. The results revealed strengths and weaknesses of the program and led to a reexamination of the assignments, the statements of desired program outcomes, and the curriculum itself.
