Celiac disease in North America: the disabling experience

Diagnosed as having celiac disease during my final year of undergraduate studies at McGill University, in the spring of 2005, my identity and lifestyle have undergone a transformative process. In this article I examine my experience of having celiac disease post-diagnosis, using the social model of disability framework. I examine the barriers that persons having celiac disease experience, both generally and personally. At the general level I explore the parallels between the experience of having celiac disease and the experience of being disabled: culturally, environmentally and financially. At the personal level I recount the emotional experience of being disabled.     

“A Very Dangerous Battleground”: How Abstinent Christian Men Select and Navigate Media in the Presence of Sexual Media Content

Abstinent Christian men are frequently challenged when selecting and navigating media due to the presence of sexual content that presents images and ideas not aligned with their sexual self-concept. In this study, we explored themes that emerged from qualitative in -depth interviews of abstinent Christian men to understand their media selection, navigation, and sexual self-concept in the context of the sexual media practice model (Shafer, Bobkowski, & Brown, 2013). Participants’ media selection and navigation were influenced by faith, and participants often attempted to control or avoid situations where sexual media content were present.

Demographic change and associated shortage of skilled labor as well as changing values in future generations of employees are omnipresent. In addition, financial service providers are facing further challenges such as impacts caused by the financial crisis and the commission remuneration model in order to reach suitable employees, so that a target group oriented employer branding strategy plays an important role.Therefore, this paper investigated characteristics of potential employees who are interested in the financial services industry and also in salary models based on commission rather than fixed pay. To that end, we conducted an online survey with students as representatives of future employees. The questionnaire investigated expectations of potential applicants regarding their employers, their information seeking behavior (especially regarding online media), values, and personality characteristics. Results give insights into successful media use and corporate presentations of employers, but also illustrate the low attractiveness of the financial services industry and also commission remuneration models. Therefore, the importance of a successful employer branding strategy is emphasized.
