Social Work in Accident and Emergency Departments: A Better Deal for Older Patients' Health?

Summary Well-established internationally, the current development ofsocial work in UK accident and emergency (A&E) departmentsis part of a conjoint health/social care policy drive to divertolder people from ‘unnecessary’ admission to acutehospital care on social grounds. However, from older serviceusers' standpoint, the prime criterion for assessing A&Esocial work is not its powers of diversion, but its contributionto optimum health and social care. Our account indicates thatA&E based social work can provide important benefits, includinghelp with negotiating the A&E environment and readier accessto social services. Nevertheless, continuing professional–serviceuser power imbalances, together with shortages in health andsocial care services, undermine its positive contribution bothwithin A&E and following discharge. Notably, under-resourcedcommunity based health and social care can lead to servicesimplemented through A&E, swiftly unravelling. This has seriousconsequences for older service users facing interlinked healthand social problems, and may be implicated in re-attendanceat A&E.     

Boomers' prospective needs for senior centers and related services: a survey of persons 50-59

The future service needs of baby boomers are unclear. A survey addressing work/retirement, family, civic engagement, health, caregiving, leisure, and perceptions of senior services was mailed to 800 addresses randomly selected from a upper Midwestern county voter registration list. The response rate was 28%. Fifty-three percent of the respondents (N = 225) intended to work and increase civic engagement. They expected more time for hobbies and friends, and to travel more. Family will continue to be their highest priority. These findings will be useful to service providers who are invested in providing services that are attractive to boomers.     

THE IMPACT ON FAMILIES OF REPORTED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT

In order to evaluate the impact upon children and families of reported child abuse and neglect and the subsequent interventions, the casenotes of a random sample of substantiated cases (N=151) dealt with by the South Australian child protection agency were searched. The goal was to identify information concerning service delivery and changes for family members in the ensuing six months. Results relevant to both of these are presented and evaluated. An important corollary finding of this work was the absence of detailed information about outcome in the casenotes. We argue that this absence of feedback to child protection workers and policy-makers is likely to have detrimental effects on both worker morale and the quality of the services provided.     

Social work students’ perceptions of obesity

Research indicates that mental health and medical professionals often hold negative views of overweight or obese people. Little is known about weight prejudice among social work students. In order to address this gap in the literature, this study examines the attitudes of Bachelor of social work and Master of social work students (n = 250) toward persons who are overweight and/or obese. Consistent with the literature, findings indicate generally those with higher body mass index scores are more likely to believe that obesity is beyond their control. Further, although age was correlated with Beliefs About Obese People scores, it was not a significant predictor. Implications for social work social justice and cultural competency curriculum are discussed.     

‘That’s definite discrimination’: practice under the umbrella of inclusion

Inclusive practice is well embedded across society and has developed over time. However, although policy and public view have moved forward, the way organisations address the agenda for inclusion often represents a superficial interpretation of this concept. Qualitative data were gathered using new ethnography to explore the experiences of a library-based reading group for visually impaired readers. The voices of the individuals shed light on the individual and collective experience of reading. These insights challenge the traditional views of distinct provision that are designed to address targets for inclusion of individuals with disabilities. We argue for a clearer focus on the unintentional consequences of practice in the name of inclusion that leave individuals feeling marginalised. This paper suggests the alternative focus on social justice as offering a discourse that focuses on society and away from the individual.     

NLRB v. Lechmere: Union quest for access

Union attempts to organize nonemployee places of business have traditionally placed employers and union members at odds. In 1992, the United States Supreme Court ended a longstanding rule that the rights of these parties should be balanced in order to determine whether the union’s right to access or the employer’s property right predominated. As it now stands, the rule is that nonemployee union members have no right of access to an employer’s private property unless extreme special circumstances exist, such as isolated work locations where employees have no access to union information. The Supreme Court’s ruling is one that significantly curtails union solicitation. This paper discusses the development of this rule.     

Poverty, Deregulation of the Labour Market and Benefit Fraud

This paper presents the results of a focus groups exercise conducted in Belfast. The research explored the interaction of cuts and adjustments in the benefit system, deregulation of the labour market and increases in rents in the public sector. The results of the research suggest that these policies in combination have had the unanticipated consequence of making working while claiming benefit more attractive, and that the measures announced in the 1994 budget to encourage claimants to take low paid work are unlikely to have any significant effect.
