A comparison of attitudes about cremation among Black and White middle-aged and older adults

Social workers must be instrumental in educating elders and their families to make informed decisions about death and dying. As part of a larger qualitative study, we explored attitudes about cremation of 25 older and 25 middle-aged adults, evenly split between Black and White respondents. Major themes emerged about disposition of the body after death. Costs and land conservation influenced support for cremation; reasons against cremation include religious beliefs, lack of closure, and sense of place. Additionally, some respondents were against cremation primarily because of lack of exposure, as it was not their family tradition, suggesting a role for education.     

Fourth order rotatability

Fourth order rotatable designs are discussed. A general k, design moment inequality is given. The variance function for two-factor designs is derived, and plotted for a specific design. A minimum point set requirement for two-factor designs is established, thus enabling one to form an infinity of such designs. Some difficulties in obtaining deLigns for k>2 are described. Some questions are posed for future work.     

Assessing prior information for designed experiments

We examine, via a Bayesian analysis, in a general experimental situation, whether if is worthwhile to obtain additional prior information before performing an experiment. Examples illustrate the application of the techniques developed.     

Inspection errors in link sampling

Results of an investigation into the sensitivity to two types of inspection error of link sampling procedures described by Harischchandra and Srivenkataramana are reported. Relevant compound distributions are derived. Some comparisons with results obtained in a similar investigation for standard double sampling are also given.     

Dorfman-sterrett screening (group testing) schemes and the effects of faulty inspection

The Dorfman screening procedure is based on first testing a group of items as a whole, proceeding to individual testing only if the group-test indicates existence of at least one nonconforming item. A modification suggested by Sterrett allows for reintroduct-ion of group testing of all items, not yet tested individually, when an item is classified as nonconforming by an individual test. Effects of faulty test inspection on the properties of the modified procedures are studied.     

Conventional and expanded adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and maternal functioning among low-income Black mothers

A paucity of research has examined the individual and cumulative effects of conventional and expanded adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on maternal functioning, especially among low-income Black mothers. Using self-report data from a subsample of Black mothers (N = 157) who participated in a larger study to evaluate the effectiveness of an urban public prekindergarten program in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, we examined the prevalence of ACEs and the individual and cumulative effects of conventional (i.e., family trauma and dysfunction) and expanded (i.e., community stressors) ACEs on depression and health among low-income Black mothers. Findings indicated that Black mothers had more exposure to expanded than conventional ACEs. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that experience of physical neglect was significantly associated with depression and physical abuse with compromised health, and perceived experience of racism was a predictor of depression and compromised health. More conventional and expanded ACEs were associated with clinical levels of depression and compromised health. Findings highlight the need for more research related to the impact of ACEs, especially expanded ACEs, on mental and behavioural health outcomes. Additionally, our findings indicate the need for more trauma-informed care to reduce and address the impact of individual and community-level adversities on low-income Black mothers.     

The European Union's migration management aid: Developing democracies or supporting authoritarianism?

The European Union and its member states have invested billions of euros in migration management programs that purport to promote “good migration governance” around the world. But what is the impact of migration management aid on governance outside of the EU? In this article, we theorise the impact of migration management aid on governance in recipient countries by analysing the key policy areas of intervention. To do so, we focus on the effects of the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa and draw on data collected from policy and government documents, in addition to secondary literature, to understand how migration management aid negatively impacts institutions of governance in recipient countries. While migration management aid may build the capacity of states to monitor borders and prevent irregular migration, we argue that this fails to account for negative externalities including human rights abuses and increased surveillance for migrants and citizens alike.     

THE ADOPTION OF OPERATIONS RESEARCH TECHNIQUES BY MANUFACTURING ORGANIZATIONS

This research examines the adoption of operations research techniques by manufacturing organizations. The study includes the frequency of use, techniques used, organizational units and the number of personnel, types of problems analyzed, overall results achieved, and problems encountered among various sizes of firms and industry classes.
