Relationship Difficulties Among U.K. Military Personnel: Impact of Sociodemographic,Military, and Deployment-Related Factors

Military work, especially operational deployments, may impact the romantic relationships of military personnel. Using a subsample of 7,581 participants from a cohort study of U.K. military personnel (data collected between 2007 and 2009), the prevalence of relationship difficulties and associations with sociodemographic, military-, and deployment-related characteristics was examined. Most participants did not report experiencing relationship difficulties. Adjusted regression analyses indicate that childhood adversity, limited support for and from partners, being in unmarried relationships, financial problems, deploying for more than 13 months in 3 years, and work being above trade, ability, and experience were key factors associated with relationship difficulties. The likelihood of U.K. military personnel experiencing relationship difficulties is increased because of personal vulnerabilities that may be exacerbated in the military context.     

Ethical Issues in the Use of Putative Father Registries in Infant Adoption: Implications for Administrators and Practitioners

Infant adoption policy and practices are laden with potential ethical dilemmas for adoption professionals, state and federal government, and society in general. Putative father registries raise new ethical issues in the provision of adoption services and the rights and roles of birthfathers. Birthfathers have relatively little power in the policy arena and the power differential between the parties in an adoption is evident. Administrators and practitioners at all levels of practice have an obligation to see that birthfathers are treated fairly and with dignity. This article examines the issues related to the use of putative father registries and the ethical implications regarding birthfather rights.     

MASCOT: An agent-based architecture for dynamic supply chain creation and coordination in the internet economy

The emerging global internet economy will increasingly put a premium on the ability of companies to quickly and accurately evaluate new market opportunities, new product/ subcomponent designs, and other strategic business decisions (e.g. make-or-buy) in coordination with potential supply chain partners. It also requires that companies be able to effectively and efficiently coordinate activities, e.g. production and transportation across supply chains that are dynamically set up in response to constantly changing and increasingly customized market requirements. This paper provides an overview of MASCOT ('multi-agent supply chain cordination tool'), a reconfigurable, multi-level, agent-based planning and scheduling architecture aimed at supporting these functionalities. It reviews key innovative elements of the MASCOT architecture with a special emphasis on its support of realtime mixed-initiative 'what-if' functionalities, enabling endusers at different levels within the architecture to rapidly     

Asceticism in mysticism: Transcendental meditation

Max Weber differentiated mysticism from active asceticism and regarded the two as polar orientations to the world. It is the contention here that, although Transcendental Meditation (TM) is based on a traditional Eastern otherworldly mysticism, it nevertheless serves to reinforce an innerworldly ascetic orientation. Evidence is presented that the TM technique is promoted as a means to mundane (worldly) ends and that elements of the belief system—coupled with the physiological correlates of meditation—serve to facilitate and reinforce an attitude of active mastery rather than accommodation and contemplation. This instrumental use of a mystical religious tradition is explained in terms of the process of secularization.     

Gender-Sensitive Social Work Practice: A Model for Education

Many social work educators are in search of ways to integrate course content on women while preserving time-tested models of assessment and intervention. Although women comprise the majority of social work clients, most psychological models of assessment and intervention are based on male psychological development. In contrast, feminist theories and therapies have turned attention to female psychological development and how this differs from male progression. This article describes and discusses a psychotherapeutic model for practice and education that allows for balanced gender sensitivity and that can be readily superimposed on existing models for more effective assessment and intervention.     

Aggregation of smooth preferences

Suppose p is a smooth preference profile (for a society, N) belonging to a domain P ^N . Let σ be a voting rule, and σ(p)(x) be the set of alternatives in the space, W, which is preferred to x. The equilibrium E(σ(p)) is the set {x∈W:σ(p)(x) is empty}. A sufficient condition for existence of E(σ(p)) when p is convex is that a “dual”, or generalized gradient, dσ(p)(x), is non-empty at all x. Under certain conditions the dual “field”, dσ(p), admits a “social gradient field”Γ(p). Γ is called an “aggregator” on the domain P ^N if Γ is continuous for all p in P ^N . It is shown here that the “minmax” voting rule, σ, admits an aggregator when P ^N is the set of smooth, convex preference profiles (on a compact, convex topological vector space, W) and P ^N is endowed with a C ¹-topology. An aggregator can also be constructed on a domain of smooth, non-convex preferences when W is the compact interval. The construction of an aggregator for a general political economy is also discussed. Some remarks are addressed to the relationship between these results and the Chichilnisky-Heal theorem on the non-existence of a preference aggregator when P ^N is not contractible. ANOMIE, SOLIDARITY, AND CONFLICT: French Sociology and the Limits of Dialogue

What explains the splintering of the sociological imagination? Why do so many rival schools contend for influence? Is there a chance for consensus? Donald N. Levine seeks to answer these questions in his intriguing recent study of the sociological tradition. He contends that sociology has been divided from the start along national lines, yet continues to progress towards harmony thanks to the “dialogical’ commitments of the various national traditions. I argue that Levine misjudges the character and depth of past and present rifts, and that he overestimates the likelihood of future disciplinary unity.
