Academics versus athletics: An examination of the effects of background and socialization on African American male student athletes

It has been stated that popular culture's deluging society with images of African American males as athletes and entertainers is detrimental to the academic and social growth of this group. African American males are over-represented in the sports world, which has recently been attributed to the intentional and intensive socialization of African American into sports. The consequences that have emerged from this phenomena include an over identification with athletic achievement to the detriment of academic achievement. This study addresses the socialization process as an indicator of the overall success or failure of student athletes. This research is a case study of an entire football team at a major Division I University. The research questions were addressed by data collected through a questionnaire designed by the researchers. Several scales, tested for reliability and validity, were utilized to tap the relevant dimensions of the socialization process. Several interesting findings were yielded concerning the parental emphasis on athletics and the effects that emphasis has on academics.     

The effectiveness of parenting support

This research review examines what is known about the effectiveness of parenting support, and assesses the international evaluation evidence focusing on primary and secondary prevention programmes. It outlines several factors affecting the success of parenting support interventions in terms of service implementation and delivery, as well as outcomes for children and parents. The conclusions highlight the need for more rigorous UK‐based evaluations, and for further investigation of the support services for specific parenting groups such as very vulnerable families, fathers, and ethnically diverse families. The review also underlines the need for further national policies that address the broader social inequalities affecting the impact of parenting programmes.     

Somewhere Between: Social Embeddedness and the Spectrum of Wild Edible Huckleberry Harvest and Use

Abstract This case study is centered in northeast Washington State and northern Idaho and focuses on the social ecology of the wild edible huckleberry. The theoretical notion of social embeddedness is the lens through which the harvest and use of this much‐prized resource is viewed and analyzed. Using grounded theory as an over‐arching method, qualitative data were collected over two harvesting seasons regarding who harvests huckleberries in the study area and why. Four categories of use/users were identified. The results suggest a rich tapestry of social relations surrounding this resource that belies the simplistic notion of “commercial” vs. “recreational” use. These relations include temporal, geographic, economic, and cultural dimensions. Policy implications include the need to move beyond the commercial/recreational dichotomy in regulating the harvest of berries as well as the need to link the notions of community forestry and subsistence to the harvest of non‐timber forest products more generally.     

Peer Influence, Images of Smokers, and Beliefs about Smoking among Preadolescent Nonsmokers

The purpose of the current study was to test whether perceived peer influence is related to image of a typical smoker, and whether image of a typical smoker is associated with beliefs about the effects of smoking among preadolescent nonsmokers. Two hundred and ninety‐two preadolescents completed a survey indicating their perceptions of the prevalence and encouragement for smoking among peers, image of a typical smoker, beliefs about the social and physical consequences of smoking, and overall harm caused by smoking. Hypotheses were partially supported. Perceived peer influence was related to image of a typical smoker; image of a typical smoker was related only to the beliefs about harm caused by smoking. Results are discussed in terms of the cognitive mechanisms involved in the process of peer influence.     

Communications Technology—empowerment or Disempowerment?

Developments in communication technology can reduce dependence on others and facilitate independent living for disabled people. Recently developed telephone-based services allow users to call up help quickly, as and when they need it. But the dominant model of provision emphasises vulnerability, assumes a need for protection and imposes rules about appropriate use. The article identifies the influence of manufacturers and providers of communication alarms in perpetuating paternalistic approaches to services for older disabled people and limiting the potential for user determination of need. Emergent models which aim to facilitate user-control face low expectations among users, the entrenched attitudes of providers and the dominance of the market in influencing practice. The mixed economy of social care is likely to increase the gap between providers' interests and users' needs.     

Taking action on racial disproportionality in the child welfare system

Mirroring national trends, children of color in Washington state's King County are overrepresented at every point in the child welfare system and fare worse by most measures than are Caucasian children. The King County Coalition on Racial Disproportionality was formed to reduce and ultimately eliminate racial disproportionality in the county's child welfare system. The research-based strategies implemented to address the issue focused on children in care longer than two years. They included participation in the Breakthrough Series Collaborative on Racial Disproportionality, implementation of benchmark hearings, and development of Champions for Permanence. Now in the beginning stages, perhaps the most significant success is heightened awareness within the community of the disparate outcomes for children of color in the child welfare system.     

Behavioral activation and rehabilitation

Rehabilitation from a mental or physical disorder can become complicated when patients feel overwhelmed by symptoms and unable to make progress. Newer behavioral approaches have been developed that can help these patients. This article describes behavioral activation techniques designed to address depression.     

Effects of sleep inertia on cognitive performance following a 1-hour nap

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of a 1-h nap on subsequent performance in spatial memory (SM) and logical reasoning (LR) tasks. The objective was to evaluate the duration of the effects of sleep inertia (SI). The performance was measured in two independent groups of subjects. The 1-h nap took place at 00:00 h in group 1 and at 03:00 h in group 2. In each task, the experimental design comprised one no-nap condition in which subjects had no sleep before the night tests, and a nap condition that comprised the 1-h nap followed by the test sessions. To measure the duration of SI effects, the subjects were tested in two 30-min sessions and the data in each session were analysed in sub-units of time of 3 min each. In each task the results showed no effects on accuracy, and no circadian effects of napping were found. In each task, analyses of pooled data of the two groups showed that the performance in the 1-h nap condition exhibited significant reductions of speed immediately following awakening, when compared with no-nap, reflecting SI effects. In SM, the slowing lasted 24 min, and 27 min in LR. Practical implications of the results are discussed.     

How companies motivate entrepreneurial employees: the case of organizational spin-alongs

This paper investigates how high-profile employees with entrepreneurial abilities can be attracted, retained, and nurtured in order to foster companies’ corporate entrepreneurship through innovations. We find that the spin-along design provides entrepreneurial employees with a combination of flexibility and security (flexicurity), corporate management, and control. Based on five in-depth case studies within an innovative company, our results show that the organizational spin-along structure supports and enhances entrepreneurial employees’ motivation and leads to the attraction, nurturing, and retention of such employees. We also find that senior management has a critical leadership role in enabling such an organization design by balancing flexibility and security with control.
