Moments in the Methodology of Meso History

Meso history is that branch of the history of sociology that focuses on social relations, that is, patterns of connection among groups, group members, and group meanings, as explanatory factors in the shaping of sociology. The methodology of meso history consists of strategies for discovering, documenting and patterning connections. This paper explores those strategies in terms of three moments generic to the research process in social science– moments of movement from intellectual curiosity to conceptualization, from research question to data collection and from data to presentation of findings–focusing on the distinctive permutations on this research process that occur in the practice of meso history.     

Culture, Context, and Homicide of the Elderly

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the criminal victimization of elderly persons. Given that homicides of the elderly are thought to occur primarily in the context of robbery/burglary situations, this study seeks to identify situational as well as structural and cultural factors that influence the murder of older persons. In particular, it has been noted that Southern culture promotes a notion that one should 'respect their elders.' Using conservative Protestant affiliation as a proxy for Southern culture, this study also examines the relationship between Southern culture and homicide of the elderly. Findings show that Southern culture as reflected in conservative Protestant affiliation does not insulate the elderly from victimization.     

Effects of segmentation patterns on the perception of deception

Subjects viewed videotapes of truthful and deceptive messages. Channels presented were either face or body with or without speech. Subjects were instructed to segment each message into either large, medium, or small units; following the segmentation of a message, subjects rated its truthfulness. Results showed that subjects who organized the behavior into small units perceived the messages as more truthful than those who organized the behavior into either medium or large units. In addition, when speech was available, accuracy of lie detection was highest when the behavior was segmented into medium units; when speech was not available, accuracy of lie detection was highest when the behavior was segmented into small units. The effects of observation set on the perception of deception were discussed.     

A GOODNESS OF FIT TEST BASED ON THE LINKED LINE CHART1

In this paper, we propose a graphical representation of data and a test statistic based on it for testing the goodness of fit of a completely specified null distribution. The graph is constructed as a linked line chart given by vectors which reflect the pattern of order statistics. The test statistic is defined as an area defined by our chart and its asymptotic distribution is derived under the null hypothesis. Computer simulations performed to study the power properties of our chart indicate that the test is powerful for scale alternatives. Furthermore, it is shown that our test is closely related to the Watson test.     

Clinical assessment of maladjusted preschool children

The authors stress that total assessment prior to intervention is crucial, including standardized testing, observations of behavior, developmental history, and play interview. Techniques presented provide a holistic approach for evaluating the referred preschool child.     

GREAT MEN AND HARD TIMES: SOCIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Sociology at the University of Minnesota has had a long and distinguished history. From its founding in 1910 many prominent sociologists have taught and have graduated from the department. We present an overview of the growth of the department, and certain influential events which affected the direction of department governance and intellectual development. The department achieved its "Golden Age" under the leadership of F. Stuart Chapin, who chaired the department for nearly three decades (1922–1951). We speculate about the internal and external pressures that have affected the Minnesota department-and other sociology departments-over the past two decades, during its period of greatest expansion but of significant tensions as well.     

CHARACTERIZATION OF EFFICIENT SEQUENTIAL SCHEMES FOR POPULATION GROWTH MODELS1

For population growth models, which include standard processes like Poisson, birth, birth-death, immigration-death, simple epidemic and M/M/1 queue as particular cases, we obtain efficient sequential schemes and characterize all efficiently estimable functions of the parameters by first deriving a sequential version of the information inequality.
