Several studies have shown that when both statistical fluctuations and dependent events exist, unbalanced production lines out-perform balanced lines. By definition, unbalanced lines have some amount of protective capacity built into them; however, little research exists to address the question of quantity and position of protective capacity necessary to counteract the impact of variation on system performance. This research seeks to improve our understanding concerning the shape of protective capacity in unbalanced lines when faced with variation in the form of unplanned machine downtime. Both Kanban and drum-buffer-rope (DBR) controlled lines are investigated. Results show that balancing the protective capacity yields superior results over both increasing and decreasing protective capacity shapes (holding average protective capacity equal). Results also show that Kanban lines behave differently than DBR lines.  相似文献

This quantitative content analysis investigated the hookup culture in U.S. and Dutch teen girl magazines. Using Hofstede's cultural dimension of masculinity/femininity, the hookup culture (i.e., the relational context of sex, emotional context of sex, specific sexual activities, and contraceptives) was examined in 2,496 stories from all 2006 through 2008 issues of the three most popular U.S. (i.e., Seventeen, CosmoGirl! U.S. edition, and Teen) and Dutch teen girl magazines (i.e., Fancy, CosmoGirl! Netherlands edition, and Girlz!). Regarding the relational context of sex, stories about casual sex occurred more often in U.S. magazines, and Dutch magazines focused more on committed sex. Dutch magazines also emphasized sex within the emotional context of love more often than did U.S. magazines. In terms of sexual activities, coital sex was mentioned more often in U.S. coverage, while petting was mentioned more frequently in Dutch coverage. Condoms were covered more positively in U.S. magazines than in Dutch magazines. Overall, the hookup culture seems to be more visible in U.S. magazines for the occurrence of casual sex and lack of love stories, whereas it does not emerge in Dutch magazines due to the presence of committed sex and love-related articles.  相似文献

There is little to no empirical data available on how data and safety monitoring boards (DSMBs) are structured and how they operate. The purpose of this study was to provide data on this. To accomplish this goal, we administered a random survey on current structure and management practices and opinions as reported by principal investigators (PIs) and biostatisticians. We also surveyed Institutional Review Board (IRB) community members, as proxies for the public, as to their opinions on how DSMBs should be structured and managed. A final purpose was to compare opinions about what should be taking place to what is actually happening.  相似文献

This study uses data from the 2007 Survey of Consumer Finances to examine household saving behavior based on the two-period model of consumption/saving presented by Bowman et al. (Econ Behav Organ 38:155–178, 1999). The main focus of the model is the existence of an asymmetry in saving behavior in response to positive and negative adjustments in income. The results of the logistic regression analysis support the existence of loss aversion at the household level, where having income below the household’s reference level significantly decreases the likelihood of saving, but having income above the household’s reference level does not have a significant effect on the likelihood of saving.  相似文献

Organizational scholars have identified four prerequisites to effective interorganizational collaboration: incentive, willingness, ability, and capacity. This study analyzes data drawn from participants in eight family services collaboratives in order to assess the relationships identified in the literature. Our findings support the premise that each of these prerequisites is positively related to collaborative effectiveness. Implications for collaboration leaders are suggested.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if a link may be found between abuse history, fear of negative evaluation, and negative self-statements concerning heterosocial interaction. Participants were 59 female and 39 male college students from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Correlational analyses were done for both genders between measures of childhood and adolescent abuse history, fear of negative evaluation, and the use of positive vs. negative self-statements concerning social interaction. Positive correlations were obtained between the scale for sexual abuse and fear of negative evaluation, and between the scale for sexual abuse and the negative self-statement scale in the female group. T-tests revealed a significant difference between genders for total scores on the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CAT; Sanders & Becker-Lausen, 1995) and for the negative home environment/neglect subscale of the CAT. The findings suggest that women with history of sexual abuse may be at risk during social interactions with men. Findings of a significant difference between genders on the CAT, specifically in the area of negative home environment/neglect imply that girls suffer a higher level of abuse in this area than do boys.  相似文献

Sociological studies suggest that there is social change occurring in the acceptance of lesbians and gay men in the workplace. Compared to prior decades, there are more businesses that welcome, value, and even privilege nonheterosexual sexual identities and relationships. Few studies have analyzed workers' experiences in these types of work contexts. In this article, we explore the experiences of “out” LGB women and men who work for organizations that they consider “gay-friendly.” In-depth interviews demonstrated that, although gay and lesbian workers feel that they are accepted in “gay-friendly” organizations, they nevertheless described differential treatment because of their sexual identity. We discuss evidence of stereotyping, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination in their work experiences. Although the movement toward greater acceptance of gays and lesbians in the workplace has made significant progress, the transformation is so far incomplete. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of this research for the study of equality in organizations.  相似文献

Voluminous scholarship documents the wage gap, occupational segregation, sexual harassment, and other forms of gender inequality at work. Few sociological studies explore women's work relationships with other women. Our article summarizes existing research from several disciplines on women's working relationships with other women. Specifically, three themes about the conditions of work emerge that discourage women's support for other women: (a) negative stereotypes about women, (b) lack of recognition of gender inequality, and (c) the devaluation of women's relationships, groups, and networks. We assert that these conditions reinforce essentialized notions of women, ignore larger structural inequalities at work, and cast women as the primary culprit in perpetuating gender inequality at work. We conclude with promising areas for future research on women's working relationships with other women.  相似文献
