Career Issues and Workplace Considerations for the Transsexual Community: Bridging a Gap of Knowledge for Career Counselors and Mental Heath Care Providers

The field of career counseling has addressed the needs of several minority groups; however, the transsexual community has consistently been overlooked. Transsexual individuals may face many personal and professional obstacles due to the complex psychological aspects and expensive medical procedures inherent in transitioning (the complex and multidimensional process of changing genders). Maintaining employment and a steady income are vital when engaging in this costly transition experience. In this article, the authors bridge a gap of knowledge for career counselors and mental health care providers by identifying possible workplace issues and propose 4 primary competency components. A critique of the current literature, recommendations for counselors, and directions for future research are discussed.     

The Changing Institution of Marriage: Adolescents’ Expectations to Cohabit and to Marry

Cohabitation has become part of the pathway toward marriage. Prior work focuses on expectations to marry and has ignored cohabitation. Although most young adults are not replacing marriage with cohabitation, but instead cohabit and then marry, it is important to study adolescents’ joint expectations to cohabit as well as marry. Our analyses draw on recently collected data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (N = 1,293). We find that adolescents are less certain about their cohabitation than marriage expectations. Dating and sexual experience, traditional values, prosocial activities, and parents influence adolescents’ union formation expectations. The findings from this work suggest that adolescents are including cohabitation as part of their future life trajectories but rarely envision cohabitation as substituting for marriage.     

Quality Provision with Heterogeneous Consumer Reservation Utilities

This study examines a firm's quality and price decisions when consumers differ not only in their willingness‐to‐pay for quality but also in their reservation utility for the basic product. We find that while the firm offers lower‐quality products when consumers' valuations for quality deteriorate, the optimal quality may increase with a negative shift in consumers' reservation utilities. We also investigate the optimal price and quality of the products within a vertically differentiated product line when the number of products is exogenously given. The existing literature shows that when consumers differ only in their willingness‐to‐pay for quality, the firm sets the efficient quality for consumers with the highest valuation for quality, whereas the concern for cannibalization pushes down the quality of inferior products. We find that when consumers are heterogeneous in both their reservation utility and valuation for quality, the concern for cannibalization may distort the quality upwards, even for consumers with the highest willingness‐to‐pay for quality. In addition, a low‐quality product may enjoy a higher profit margin than a high‐quality product within the product line.     

Gender and Casual Sexual Activity From Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood: Social and Life Course Correlates

The prevalence of casual sexual activity among teens and emerging adults has led to much public attention. Yet limited research has investigated whether the number of casual sexual partners per year changes as heterosexual men and women transition from adolescence into emerging adulthood. We considered the influence of social context and life course factors on the number of casual sex partners. We examined four waves of interviews from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS) and used negative binomial growth curve models to investigate patterns of change in the number of casual sex partners (N = 1,196) ages 15 to 22. Men and women both reported increases in the number of casual sex partners over time and did not differ from each other in the rate of change over time. In all, 40% of respondents reported a recent casual sex partner at age 22. Number of prior dating relationships, education status, substance use, and perceptions of peer sexual behavior significantly influenced the number of casual sex partners. Emerging adults who did not complete high school, compared to those enrolled in four-year degree programs, reported significantly more partners. The findings contribute to research on intimate relationships and provide insights for programs targeting emerging adults.

关于文学在魏晋南北朝的地位问题——兼析“文章与道德相抗衡”“文学高于一切”

魏晋南北朝时人已经清楚地认识到了文学本身具有不依附他者的价值,并对这一价值给以肯定。这标志着文学进入了自觉时代,标志着文学取得了独立的地位。然而独立后的文学并没有在东晋被谁真的认为过“驾乎道德之上”,更没有在南朝取得过“高于一切说”的地位。纵观历史,这不仅东晋南朝为然,而且其后的唐、宋、元、明、清等各时代也莫不如此。

我国公立高校收费行为分析

我国高等教育收费行为始于1980年高等教育经费由中央和地方分级核拨后,在需求诱致下各高校兴起的招收自费生、收取委培费的实践。这种制度创新正是所谓的免费制度无法实现潜在利益,从而使行为者产生了新的收费制度安排的需求。也正是由于学校单位从免费制度到收费制度的变迁收益,才提供了国家收费制度变迁的重要客观条件。此外,准市场化的内外环境也为高校收费制度改革提供了坚实的客观基础。

作为五四白话文运动的领军人物,胡适在白话为"他们"还是为"我们"自己写作的意识上有着十分尴尬的解说。分析胡适的心理深层症结,对其构建的以白话文为底色的新文学逻辑进行深入梳理,由此我们可以窥见"新青年派"知识群体在现代性演进过程中思想谱系的吊诡。胡适主导的精英意识和另一种启蒙路径——民粹思想形成了鲜明对比。归根结底,无论胡适们当年怎样为"他们"呐喊,他都会走向"我们"。
