A Cognitive Stress Reduction Program for Recently Unemployed Managers

This study examined the effectiveness of a structured cognitive stress reduction program for unemployed managers involved in an outplacement program. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. One group of managers received structured weekly counseling using a cognitively based stress reduction program. They were compared with a control group that received unstructured advice about managing stress as part of a typical outplacement program. The managers who received the cognitive intervention, as compared with managers in the control group, found reemployment significantly sooner and showed reductions in levels of state anxiety and anger that were statistically significant.     

THE SYSTEMIC TREATMENT OF SHAME IN COUPLES

Shame remains largely a hidden phenomenon in the treatment of couples. It can manifest itself as a determining factor in events ranging from entrenched blaming to missed appointments. Although there is a growing body of literature on individual shame dynamics and, to a lesser extent, on couple and family shame dynamics, there is little written on how to incorporate these theories into treatment. This paper offers working definitions of shame, proposes a systemic definition of shame as seen in couples, reviews the literature on coule shame dynamics, and explores issues of therapeutic stance and treatment techniques in working with shame in couples therapy.     

Identity and Ideas: A Roundtable on Identity Politics

This roundtable discussion examines the issue of identity politics and how identity influences and is influenced by gay/queer politics and theory. The participants discuss how identity politics affects political organizing and activism, how different identity communities can build coalitions, how the language related to identity is evolving, and how sexual attractions and practices interact with identity. The discussants look at how the influx into the gay and lesbian movement of new groups that challenge traditional identity boundaries—e.g., bisexuals and transgendered people—is affecting the movement. Finally, the discussants examine how “idea-based” politics may supplant identity-based politics as a new inclusive paradigm.     

Unmet service needs of families of young children with chronic illnesses and disabilities

Data about health and educational services were collected from 187 families with young children (under two years) who have chronic illnesses and disabilities. The purpose was to assess parents' satisfaction with services their families received and to identify families' unmet service needs as well as the reasons for these unmet needs. Although families' ratings of the adequacy of services are relatively high, 28% of the families report unmet service needs. The unmet needs most often reported are occupational, physical, or speech therapy; respite care/child care; and special education. Lack of funding is the most commonly given reason for unmet needs. Children with multiple impairments are at highest risk for unmet needs. Only 22% of unmet needs reported at the initial interview have been met by the time of the six-month follow-up. Increased coordination and monitoring of services across service sectors are indicated. Moderniser la confiance L'assurance-qualité comme décontextualisation de la sous-traitance industrielle*

Quality assurance is an institution typical of the global economy in the context of advanced modernity. It decontextualizes economic behaviour in time and space (Luhmann, Giddens). An empirical study of the relations between Alcan Canada Ltd. and five subcontracting firms operating in the Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean area of Quebec shows that the abstract and extralocal standards of quality assurance transform the subcontractors social processes of selection and performance evaluation. The participation of quality assurance experts in the inter-firm relationships lessens the reliance on traditional relationships of trust, in favour of a new trust in abstract systems and expertise. L'assurance-qualité est une institution typique de la globalisation de l'économie dans le contexte de la modernité avancée. Elle décontex-tualise les comportements économiques dans le temps et dans l'espace (Luhmann, Giddens). Une étude empirique des relations d'Alcan Canada limitée avec cinq entreprises de la région du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (Québec) montre que les standards abstraits et extralocaux de l'assurance-qualité changent le processus social de sélection et d'évaluation du rendement des sous-traitants. L'intervention des experts de l'assurance-qualité dans les relations interfirmes diminue l'importance des rapports de confiance traditionnels au profit d'une nouvelle confiance-systeme.     

Analytical approach for determining the cost optimum raw material quality level

In this paper, the expected cost of a raw

material quality characteristic is determined and

the cost optimum quality level is found. A series

of piecewise linear functions is used torepresent a general cost function. Examples are given in

which the distributions of quality characteristics are treated as being either

uniform or normal. The relationship between a raw
