Impact of early memories and current experiences of warmth and safeness on adolescents' psychological distress

A variable-centered and a person-centered approach were performed to examine the role of early memories of warmth and safeness (EMWS) and current experiences of warmth and safeness (CEWS) on depressive and anxious symptoms among adolescents from community and residential youth care (RYC) settings. Variable-centered results revealed EMWS were only indirectly (through CEWS) associated with depressive and anxious symptoms. Person-centered outcomes allowed to identify four different profiles based on EMWS and CEWS, which differed on depressive and anxious symptoms. EMWS and CEWS seem to play an important role in psychological distress during adolescence. CEWS seem to have a protective role on RYC adolescents' psychological distress, even when EMWS were poor.     

Analysis of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy maternal cohort study, revisited

The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) maternal cohort study provided robust evidence of an enhanced risk of developing BSE for offspring of BSE-affected dams. We present for the first time, but in retrospect, an interim analysis of the BSE maternal cohort study and set it in historical context, some of which has only been revealed through the BSE inquiry. We also consider the implications for design of extending the BSE maternal cohort study once an enhanced risk to exposed calves had been established, to assess the risk to calves born further from the clinical onset of BSE in the dam than those in the original study. We demonstrate that, if a data monitoring committee had been established, conclusions similar to those based on the final results could have been drawn several years before the completion of the BSE maternal cohort study. Further, we conclude that an extension of the cohort study is unlikely to have been commissioned because of the substantial financial investment required, yet low power, and practical difficulties associated with implementation of any worthwhile extension.     

Constructivism in Social Work: Towards a Participative Practice Viability

Summary Social work has traditionally drawn upon an expansive rangeof social science research and theorizing as its claim upona ‘knowledge base’. Recent debates have exploredthe need for the profession to develop its own theory of socialwork knowledge arising from practice. This paper seeks to extendthe boundaries of these ideas through an operational and epistemologicalelaboration and critique of Sheppard's (1995a; 1998) notionof a practice paradigm. In an examination of the contributionof constructivism and the seminal work of George Kelly's (1955)Psychology of Personal Constructs, arguments are put forwardfor social work practice to focus upon the co-construction ofviable working relationships with service users as the basisfor an anti-oppressive and participative professionalism. Itargues that the sterile philosophical dichotomies between objectivism/realism-subjectivism/interpretivismand the equally unhelpful social work division between practice-theoryshould be integrated within a situated, participatory, constructivistapproach to knowledge creation in social work practice and continuingprofessional development.
