Managing lean capabilities through flexible workforce development: a process and framework

Many firms today are employing temporary contractual workers in order to help them to stay lean and flexible. The benefit of this approach is that the process of layoff is much easier. Thus, an emerging issue arises here, on how can firms manage and train temporary workers effectively? The core of lean adoption is through people, to have workers buy into the ideas and be part of the overall initiative. There is very little guidance available on how to deal with contractual workers who have less motivation and commitment to the firm given that they are only employed on a temporary basis. This article proposes a framework and process to assist firms in managing and training temporary workers to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the implementation of lean improvement initiatives.     

Grappling with Realities: Policy and Practice in HIV Social Work

In 2012 the NSW HIV Strategy 2012–2015: A New Era was released, with a goal of eradicating Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) by 2020. This new policy, prioritising biomedical treatment, has raised challenges for social work practitioners working in the HIV field. We undertook a research project exploring the implications of the Strategy on social work clients and practice. A questionnaire was sent to 57 HIV social workers and 32 (56.1%) responses were received. Thematic analysis identified five main themes affecting social workers and their clients. These were a new stigma, treatment benefits, the complexity of people's lives, the psychosocial voice, and ethical and professional tensions. We propose that a more holistic HIV strategy including the psychosocial realities that inform HIV transmission, testing and treatment options, and adherence be adopted.     

A poor cotton weyver: Poverty and the cotton famine in Clitheroe

The American Civil War had dramatic consequences for 500,000 Lancashire factory operatives who relied on supplies of cotton from America for their livelihoods. This study, concentrating on the small town of Clitheroe, investigates the responses of the Poor Law Board of Guardians, the charitable Relief Committee, local employers and the operatives themselves to this crisis and the deprivation that ensued. Using parliamentary papers, local newspaper reports, guardian Minutes Books and diaries kept by a prominent mill owner and one of his employees, the article questions the picture painted at the time and by later historians of a benevolent paternalism. It argues that relief was slow and strictly conditional. The employers' aim throughout was to take advantage of the economic situation and to maintain a submissive workforce. The cotton operatives found themselves at the mercy of the economic situation. Although praised for their quiet endurance, they protested at their treatment and accepted relief only grudgingly.     

“Nothing Hurts the Cause More Than That”

The final season of the television series Veronica Mars was marked by a narrative shift from an apparent investment in supporting feminist values to a virulent attack on US feminism. This shift reproduces several of the tenets central to the discourses of the backlash, including the views that feminism promotes hostility towards men, that it has betrayed women rather than advocating on their behalf, and that feminist liberation comes at a tremendous personal cost, which leaves women miserable and unfulfilled. This essay examines the show's transformation into a backlash text within the context of the pressure reportedly placed on writers and producers to increase ratings in order to avoid cancellation. It argues that because the series's reproduction of backlash rhetoric can be read as reflective of the popular view that feminism is antithetical to the values of the US cultural mainstream, it illustrates the influence of the backlash on US market forces, as well as on US popular culture. It also suggests that, in the process, the series reveals a great deal about the ways in which profit motives intersect with, and possibly override, ideological considerations in the production of popular culture texts.     

“Xenasubtexttalk”

This article examines how some lesbian fans of the television adventure fantasy series Xena: Warrior Princess (X:WP) (1995–2001) became visible through the development of online fandom and the production of explicit lesbian Internet fan fiction. The self-identity of lesbian fans who are part of the “xenasubtextalk” (XSTT) fan group is explored and celebrated through social networks of lesbian fandom through the “Xenaverse.” Lesbian fans have written copious amounts of fan fiction online enabling a form of lesbian political discourse and activism as well as social and cultural discourses shared throughout the platform of the Internet. Many lesbian fans have been supported to create and write Xena lesbian fan fiction by engaging with various lesbian fan writers from the Xenaverse who offer their advice to develop lesbian fan fiction services for free to “newbie” writers. Their explicit lesbian fan fiction narratives are reproduced and distributed as lesbian stories about the two main characters Xena and Gabrielle from the original television series. I interviewed three women from “xenasubtextalk” who gain pleasure exploring their lesbian identities and fandom through the fan group.     

Developmental Foundations and Clinical Applications of Social Information Processing: A Review

Social information processing has emerged as an important construct in understanding children's interpersonal functioning. This article reviews (1) the theoretical models guiding research, (2) the development of normative and atypical social problem solving, and (3) the connection between social information processing and individual differences in functioning. Finally, this review ends with a summary of efficacy of programs aimed at preventing social information processing biases or intervening with youth who display dysfunctional social information processing skills.
