The Benefits of Diversity in Education for Democratic Citizenship

The social science statement in Brown v. Board of Education (1954) stressed that desegregation would benefit both African American and White children. Eventually, it was recognized that integration, rather than mere desegregation, was important for benefits to be realized. A parallel argument is made in the legal cases concerning affirmative action in higher education: educational benefits of diversity depend on curricular and co-curricular experience with diverse peers, not merely on their co-existence in the same institution ( Gurin, P., 1999 , Gurin, Dey, Hurtado, & Gurin, 2002 ). Positive benefits of diversity were demonstrated in a study comparing students in a curricular diversity program with students in a matched control group ( n = 174 ), and in a longitudinal survey of University of Michigan students ( n = 1670 ) .     

Adolescents' Satisfaction with Contact in Adoption

The current investigation drew from the second wave of data collected from the Minnesota-Texas Adoption Research Project (MTARP). Adolescents involved in adoptive arrangements in which there is contact with birth parents were compared to adolescents who do not have contact with their birth parents in terms of satisfaction with adoption openness. ANOVA results indicated that adolescents who have contact with their birthmothers maintain higher satisfaction with contact status than those who do not have contact. No effects for gender or age were noted. In terms of contact with birthfathers, adolescents with contact maintained higher satisfaction with contact status than those who do not have contact. Significant effects for age were also noted, insofar as satisfaction with contact increases with age. Implications of these findings for adoption professionals are put forth, as well as directions for further research.     

The Differences in Financial Structure Between Women- and Men-Owned Family Businesses

Lenders often are faced with the challenge of evaluating the financial success of a business or a proposed business by examining the financial records of the household, reasoning that an assessment of the household's financial position should be a plausible indicator of the financial status of the business. Utilizing data from the recently released Family Business Survey, this study uses financial information about both the family and the business to examine the relationship between household financial indicators and business financial indicators for women- and men-owned family businesses. The results suggest that, while household financial statements may be good indicators for men-owned businesses, they appear to be much less reliable for women-owned businesses.     

The influence of urban park characteristics on ant (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) communities

As rapid urbanization continues, existing natural areas within urban zones will play a critical role in safeguarding remaining biodiversity. Ants are an integral part of almost every terrestrial ecosystem, including urban environments, and understanding which environmental characteristics influence their persistence is critical. In this study, 24 protected natural areas within urban parks including mosaic, scrub, herbaceous and forest habitats were surveyed for ants with 563 pitfall traps. The data provide insights into the distribution and abundance of ant fauna in San Francisco natural areas, as well as which characteristics of parks have the most influence on ant community composition. A total of 2,068 ant individuals representing 15 species were collected. A regression analysis revealed that urban forests reduced ant richness and abundance and that there was little or no impact of the Argentine ant on native ants. Natural area size and shape were not important in explaining variations in overall ant species richness and abundance, with many smaller natural areas harboring ant populations that are just as diverse and robust as larger areas.     

Trust and Health Care

Trust is believed to be particularly salient to the provision of health care, and since the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, trust has played an important role in the relationships between its three key actors: the state, healthcare practitioners, and patients and the public. Service users trusted the judgement, knowledge and expertise of health professionals to provide a competent service that met their needs, and they trusted the state to ensure equity in the allocation of public goods and services. These implicit or taken-for-granted trust relationships have, it is claimed, been challenged as a result of the introduction of changes in the organisation and funding for the health service, in the regulation and performance assessment of health professionals, and in public attitudes to health care and scientific medicine. This paper considers the influences of social changes and recent policy and professional initiatives in health care on the structure of trust relations in health care in the UK. It presents a theoretical framework for examining trust relations using the NHS as a case study and concludes with an agenda for future research.     

Reviving the stalemated treatment through a self psychology re-analysis

Stalemated psychoanalytic treatment can be sustained for hears when patient and analyst work in an experience-distant analytic mode. When this occurs patients feel misunderstood, despairing and hopeless, yet, are unable to change their situation. The case of a patient who undertook a reanalysis with a self psychologist is presented to demonstrate how the empathic, experience-near treatment mode enabled the patient to overcome the stalemated problems of the first analysis. The experience of feeling understood was crucial for the deepening of the analytic work, for the furthering of the selfobject transference and for the working through of the fixations and arrests in development.Presented on November 2, 1990, at the Third National Clinical Conference of the Committee on Psychoanalysis of the National Federation of Societies for Clinical Social Work.     

Perinatal coaching--a new beginning

A hospital-based perinatal coaching program fosters communication between first-time parents and their infants. Support provided includes learning about babies' individual differences, normal responses, bonding principles, modeling techniques, early childhood development, as well as realistic expectations of new parents.
