An asymptotic test for separability of a spatial autoregressive model

In this paper an asymptotic test for the separability of the spatial AR(p ₁,1) model is presented by translating the spatial problem to a multiple time series problem. It is shown that the transformed problem reduces to testing whether or not the coefficient matrices of a certain VAR(p ₁) are diagonal.

Some simulation study results are also presented here to demonstrate the use of this test.     

"My mind's made up": assumptions and decision-making in accounts of caregiving women

In this qualitative study, rural women caregivers for elderly relatives or friends were interviewed about their decision-making. Women deliberating decisions differed from women implementing decisions in how they perceived their caregiving tasks and in their experience of stress. The difference in deliberative and implemental accounts suggests that mindset is a mediating factor for the women in the present study. Women in the process of implementing decisions regarding caregiving described their experiences in a more positive light and reported less stress. Deliberating decisions regarding caregiving, however, was likely to color the experience of caregiving, leaving the caregiver feeling vulnerable, doubtful about herself, and more stressed.     

Child Sexual Abuse Cases: Facilitating Their Detection and Reporting by General Practitioners

General Practitioners are frequently the first resource for families affected by child sexual abuse, and in many places are legally required to report suspected cases to the authorities. Based on a recent survey of GP experiences and attitudes concerning child sexual abuse, the issues relevant to GP's ability to respond appropriately are analysed in terms of (a) their ability to detect occurrence, and (b) their willingness to make official reports. As children are relatively powerless, child victims of sexual abuse may be particularly dependent on appropriate protective action by the GP, and suggestions are offered for reducing the identified obstacles to detection and reporting by GPs.     

Enacting Gustatory Pleasure on Behalf of Another: The Multimodal Coordination of Infant Tasting Practices

Tasting as a social practice can be enacted on behalf of others through precisely positioned nonlexical vocalizations as gustatory mmms. This paper uses multimodal interaction analysis to detail the coordination of parents and infants while starting to feed solid foods; data are from families in Scotland. The analysis focuses on the organization of parental mmms in relation to eye gaze, sequentiality, and the temporal coordination of hands, food, and mouths to demonstrate their use in beginning, continuing, and refocusing on taste. The paper proposes that in order to fully understand the sociality of tasting, infant feeding research should include real‐time vocal and embodied behavior, which is also key to the functional analysis of sensoriality‐related vocalizations at the margins of language.     

A class of models for aggregated traffic volume time series

Summary. The development of time series models for traffic volume data constitutes an important step in constructing automated tools for the management of computing infrastructure resources. We analyse two traffic volume time series: one is the volume of hard disc activity, aggregated into half-hour periods, measured on a workstation, and the other is the volume of Internet requests made to a workstation. Both of these time series exhibit features that are typical of network traffic data, namely strong seasonal components and highly non-Gaussian distributions. For these time series, a particular class of non-linear state space models is proposed, and practical techniques for model fitting and forecasting are demonstrated.     

Blending Prevention Models: An Effective Substance Use and HIV Prevention Program for Minority Youth

Illicit drug use and rates of HIV infection among youth have increased over the past decade, indicating the need effective substance use and HIV prevention programs. Particularly at risk are minority youth living in poor urban environments. This study examines effectiveness of an innovative prevention program that blends the “All Star” substance abuse prevention model with the “Popular Opinion Leader” model for HIV prevention. In general, the results indicate non-significant increases in drug and sex risk, behavior and significant positive changes and trends in related areas (i.e., changes in perception, self esteem) thought to be related to drug use and risky sexual behavior.Sally Stevens and Velia Leybas-Amedia are affiliated with the Southwest Institute for Research on Women, University of Arizona. A Collective Response to Michael White's Passing

The following reflection was written at the Cairns Narrative Therapy Interest Group shortly after Michael White's passing. As a group activity, each individual was interviewed about the effects of Michael White's work on their therapeutic work. Each of the responses were manually recorded and then a member of the group developed the collective document to share back with the whole group. The document was a way to capture the atmosphere that was shared at the interest group that day upon reflection of Michael. The document also enables a way to remember the influence that a collective document can produce for a group of people.     

Open Access: How Are Publishers Reacting?

Open Access (OA)—defined simply as “free, unrestricted access (to primary research articles) for everyone”—exists in various forms. Authors can achieve OA either by self-archiving their articles on the Web or by publishing in an OA journal. OA journals themselves may adopt a model of delayed OA, partial (or hybrid) OA, or full, immediate OA. But for any of these alternative models of cost recovery to work, it is necessary to know what the real costs are. More research is needed to begin to evaluate the financial and nonfinancial effects of Open Access on all those involved.
