Modelling political popularity: a correction

Summary. The paper supplies a missing step in the aggregation argument that was used in our 1997 paper in this journal. We show that monthly poll data representing the average of a sample of voter preferences, evolving in different ways in the face of new information, should follow a fractionally integrated process.     

Beyond reason: A feminist theory of ethics for journalists

In ethical decision making, emotion can be superior to reason, although historically emotion has been generally considered inferior to reason. A single concept serves as the principle for emotional development and decision making—empathy. For journalists, legal questions are often easy, ethical questions hard. “Newsworthiness” gives journalists a broad defense against privacy suits. Photographs have caused much controversy. As this article shows, usually journalists win suits involving photographs. Still, ethical questions persist. In the heat of time pressure, emotivism provides a fairly simple and accurate method of deciding whether to use photographs, and this article provides steps for applying emotivism.     

An evaluation of a trial of looking after children in the state of Victoria,Australia

The paper details the experience of implementing Looking After Children (LAC) in the out of home care system in the state of Victoria, Australia. Findings from an evaluation of the pilot project are also reported. These include observed changes in child outcomes and improvements in collaboration between different sectors of the child and family support system after implementation of LAC, as well as carer and child perceptions of the Assessment and Action Records. Findings suggest an improvement in the monitoring of children's developmental progress and developmental gains for some children after implementation. Perceptions of the Records were also generally positive. However, very few people in children's personal networks, including members of a child's family of origin took part in the assessment process. Carer reports also suggested difficulty in intersectoral working.

A light hearted look at desire, through the prism of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, offers some ideas on the nature of love.     

Physical activity and cognitive-health content in top-circulating magazines, 2006-2008

Physical activity may promote cognitive health in older adults. Popular media play an important role in preventive health communication. This study examined articles discussing associations between physical activity and cognitive health in top-circulating magazines targeting older adults. 42,753 pages of magazines published from 2006 to 2008 were reviewed; 26 articles met inclusion criteria. Explanations regarding the link between physical activity and cognitive health were provided in 57.7% of articles. These explanations were generally consistent with empirical evidence; however, few articles included empirical evidence. Physical activity recommendations were presented in 80.8% of articles; a wide range was recommended (90-300 min of physical activity per wk). Socioeconomic status and education level were not mentioned in the text. Results suggest an opportunity for greater coverage regarding the role of physical activity in promoting cognitive health in popular media. Magazine content would benefit from including more empirical evidence, culturally sensitive content, and physical activity recommendations that are consistent with U.S. guidelines.     

Adapting an HIV/STDs Prevention Curriculum to Fit the Needs of Women With Alcohol Problems

Alcohol and drug dependent women are at increased risk for HIV/STDs. This paper discusses how a prevention curriculum, "Safer Sex Skill Building" (SSB), designed to reduce the contraction of HIV/STDs among drug-abusing women, could be modified to fit the needs of alcohol-abusing women in a residential treatment program. Authors modified the SSB by incorporating feedback from expert consultants as well as by engaging study participants in revising the therapy manual in order to create a curriculum that speaks to participants' experiences. Specific steps to assist those who would want to adapt an empirically-based manual-driven treatment intervention are provided.     

Evidence-based practice for youth in supervised out-of-home care: a framework for development, definition, and evaluation

Adolescents comprise more than half of the children in child welfare supervised out-of-home care. This article considers the evidence-base for an array of services to adolescents in out-of-home care and evaluates the existing research base for each program. This review advances a framework for considering the critical need to develop, define, and evaluate the essential elements of out-of-home care services for older foster youth. Policy, program, and evaluation recommendations are forwarded.
