Although a growing number of American parents work non-standard schedules, evidence on the consequences of such working patterns is inconsistent and limited to married samples. This study highlights the importance of considering potential differences between cohabiting and married parents in terms of the relationship between non-standard work schedules and parental well-being. Based on pooled data from the 1997 and 2002 National Study of the Changing Workforce (n = 2346), we find that in contrast to married parents who experience some positive associations of non-standard schedules and parental well-being, cohabiting parents are more likely to experience a negative relationship between non-standard work schedules and parental well-being. Additionally, for cohabiting parents (but not married), non-standard work schedules are related to increased work-family conflict, which is in turn associated with lower levels of parental well-being. 相似文献

This article presents the findings of a small pilot study which examined the needs of 13 mothers with severe mental health problems whose children were involved in the child protection system. The use of the diagnosis of ‘personality disorder’ in relation to this group of women is discussed and the finding that all these women had experience of domestic violence is considered in the context of other research findings. The extent to which child protection social workers and mental health professionals worked together on these cases was explored and only limited evidence of good communication and collaboration was found. The need for effective inter‐professional and inter‐agency coordination is argued, but differing conceptions of maternal mental health problems and their relationship to children's needs may make for difficulties in professional communication and decision‐making. The article seeks to identify the differing approaches to maternal mental health problems which appear to be developing out of different groups of research studies and argues that practitioners need to be explicit in identifying their perspectives on the associated issues of maternal mental health problems and child protection. Child protection services in Australia and elsewhere face increasing internal and external demands. As a response to these pressures, in part at least, services are increasingly implementing some form of risk assessment procedures. This article examines the practice implications of the increasing use of risk assessment instruments in child protection services. It highlights the complexity of the concept of risk as the basis for a future‐oriented assessment activity. The authors suggest that this change of time frame (from what has happened to what might happen) may be detrimental to children. Through a critical review of the literature, the authors question whether risk prediction is possible and discuss the limitations of risk assessment instruments which omit some risk factors and may ignore the perspective of the child. The authors challenge the validity of risk assessment instruments in statutory settings and suggest that the protection of the organization may be a major objective in their implementation. Following Adam Smith, conventional economics gives self-interest the primary role of all economic behavior. However, past experiments with the ultimatum game often produce outcomes inconsistent with this orthodox conception of ‘economic man.’ In our replication of the ultimatum experiment, students at a small, liberal arts college do not allocate monetary rewards in a self-interested manner, but rather their choices conform with the social norm of ‘fairness’ (i.e., a 50/50 split). Fleeing the storm(s): an examination of evacuation behavior during florida’s 2004 hurricane season 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The 2004 hurricane season was the worst in Florida’s history, with four hurricanes causing at least 47 deaths and some $45
billion in damages. To collect information on the demographic impact of those hurricanes, we surveyed households throughout
the state and in the local areas that sustained the greatest damage. We estimate that one-quarter of Florida’s population
evacuated prior to at least one hurricane; in some areas, well over one-half of the residents evacuated at least once, and
many evacuated several times. Most evacuees stayed with family or friends and were away from home for only a few days. Using
logistic regression analysis, we found that the strength of the hurricane and the vulnerability of the housing unit had the
greatest impact on evacuation behavior; additionally, several demographic variables had significant effects on the probability
of evacuating and the choice of evacuation lodging (family/friends, public shelters, or hotels/motels). With continued population
growth in coastal areas and the apparent increase in hurricane activity caused by global warming, threats posed by hurricanes
are rising in the United States and throughout the world. We believe the present study will help government officials plan

To explore the burnout situation of teachers in two schools in Macau and to investigate any differences made of demographic
characteristics. The relation of burnout on social problem solving and holistic health of teachers is also studied. A self
reported questionnaire with the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (C-MBI), Chinese Social Problem Solving Inventory (C-SPSI)
and the Body-Mind-Spirit Well-Being Inventory (BMSWBI) were used. Totally 138 teachers participated in the study. With Hong
Kong data as a reference, Macau teachers scored in the average range of burnout in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization
but scored in the low range of burnout in personal accomplishment. Significance differences were found in some dimensions
of burnout in age, marital status, teaching experiences, education background and satisfaction with income. Both C-SPSI and
BMSWBI were found to be significantly negative correlated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and positive correlated
with personal achievement. The findings identified those with greater degree of burnout, to whom more attention should be
paid. The study also contributed to the limited literature on the quality of life of teachers in Macau. Finally, the findings
added on the data base for comparison internationally among the Chinese population. 相似文献

This paper reports results of a study designed to measure the long-term impact of computer supported instruction in an introductory business statistics course. Very modest behavioral outcomes were found. Computer supported instruction led to strictly short-term positive attitudinal change toward computers and their value, strictly long-term positive attitudinal change toward quantitative methods and their value, and sustained positive attitudinal change toward computers as a teaching aid. 相似文献
