The Attachment Function of Acute and Chronic Suicidal Illness in the Psychotherapy of an Adult Female Incest Survivor

This paper presents the attachment-focused psychotherapy of a suicidal adult woman with a history of paternal incest, paternal suicide, and maternal death; the latter provoked the patient’s near lethal overdose. Psychotherapy with this patient posed formidable clinical challenges because killing herself represented the internalization of profound incest-related shame and pathological beliefs about herself and mother that permeated her whole way of being. By focusing on the patient’s multiple working models of attachment associated with the incest and father’s suicide, I illustrate the intergenerational transmission of unresolved trauma underlying her suicidal illness. The implications for practice emphasize how understanding and utilizing the intersubjective disorganized attachment dynamics facilitated the patient’s internalization of more adaptive and life-affirming views of self and surrounding conditions.     

Advancing Program Theory for Licensed Assisted Living Services in Independent Housing

Assisted living programs (ALPs) embed licensed assisted living services within independent housing. To advance nascent research on this type of housing plus services, this study aimed to develop empirically grounded program theory on the processes through which ALPs benefit residents within independent housing. Eighteen in-depth interviews were conducted with current and prospective consumers of an ALP in northern New Jersey, including residents and family caregivers. The setting for the ALP was a federally subsidized independent housing building, which had introduced the ALP approximately 1 year prior to the study. Themes emerging from an iterative coding process indicated the most valued aspects of the ALP’s service delivery, including the comprehensiveness of the service options, the flexible timing for their delivery, and the relational aspects of care. Participants further described the ways in which the structure of the ALP facilitated prevention, such as preventing the occurrence and escalation of adverse health events. The study concludes by presenting a program model that integrates these findings, which suggests that ALPs deliver care in ways that make long-term services and supports more accommodating and acceptable to consumers. This, in turn, can enhance their preventive value to facilitate aging in place among independent housing residents in clinical need of such supports.

Can Economic Crime Control be Sustained? The Case of Finland

In this paper, we present some findings from research conducted in Finland on the emergence and nature of the Finnish government's Action Plans to Reduce Economic Crime and the Grey Economy. We set out the origins of the Finnish economic crime control programme, a programme that, if not unique, is peculiar in its concerted effort to attack this particular form of crime. We then address at length the prospects of such a programme - which has had some initial successes - being sustained. We consider this question through three forms of material: first, through seeking to draw some 'lessons' from other countries' experiences of efforts to control economic crime, and indeed some general international trends in this regard; second, via a conceptual consideration of the processes whereby economic crime control efforts are likely to slip down crime control agendas; and, third, through a brief analysis of the extent to which the conditions which gave rise to the Finnish initiative in the 1980s have since passed. In a discursive concluding section, we present some data on the changing levels of support for, and interest in, the programme within Finland.     

Sexual History and Present Attractiveness: People Want a Mate With a Bit of a Past,But Not Too Much

The aim of this study was to explore how people’s sexual history affects their attractiveness. Using an Internet survey, 188 participants rated their willingness to engage in a relationship with a hypothetical individual with a specified number of past sexual partners, ranging from 0 to 60+. The effect of past partner number was very large. Average willingness ratings initially rose as past partner number rose, but then fell dramatically. For short-term relationships, men were more willing than women to get involved (although the difference was not large). For long-term relationships, in contrast, there was virtually no sex difference. Thus, contrary to the idea that male promiscuity is tolerated but female promiscuity is not, both sexes expressed equal reluctance to get involved with someone with an overly extensive sexual history. Finally, participants with an unrestricted sociosexual orientation (high SO participants) were more tolerant than low SO participants of prospective mates with higher numbers of past sexual partners but were also less tolerant of prospective mates with low numbers of past sexual partners.
