VALIDATION OF A DIARY MEASURE OF CHILDREN'S PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

This study compares levels of physical activity of 9–14-year-old children from a self-reported time diary with those measured using an accelerometer. Children (N = 92) wore an accelerometer for one weekend day and completed a 24-hour time diary for that day. The time children spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity from time diaries was moderately highly correlated with the measured results. Self-reported and objective measures of intensity were correlated, but the correlation varied substantially by activity and characteristics of the family. This study provides empirical evidence to support the validity of time-diary estimates when accelerometer data are not available.     

Mapping Our Way: New Formations in Technical Services: Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians Annual Conference

The annual meeting of the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians (OVGTSL) was held May 16–18, 2007, at the Holiday Inn-University Plaza in Bowling Green, Kentucky. One hundred twenty technical services librarians from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and points beyond gathered for programming centered around the theme of “Mapping Our Way: New Formations in Technical Services.”     

Marginal information for expectation parameters

The authors consider a special case of inference in the presence of nuisance parameters. They show that when the orthogonalized score function is a function of a statistic S, no Fisher information for the interest parameter is lost by using the marginal distribution of S rather than the full distribution of the observations. Therefore, no information for the interest parameter is recovered by conditioning on an ancillary statistic, and information will be lost by conditioning on an approximate ancillary statistic. This is the case for regular multivariate exponential families when the interest parameter is a subvector of the expectation parameter and the statistic is the maximum likelihood estimate of the interest parameter. Several examples are considered, including the 2 × 2 table.     

Business adoption of information and communications technologies in the two-tier rural economy: some evidence from the South Midlands

This paper explores the reasons why rural firms choose to adopt and use information and communications technologies. Evidence for rural restructuring and its implications for conceptualising the rural economy, is reviewed. Information on firms is obtained by means of a questionnaire survey and intensive in-depth interviews. Pronounced variations in adoption are identified. They are explained by the pressures exerted by customers and suppliers and the ways these are responded to by managers. The concept of a two-tier rural economy, based upon levels of adoption, is introduced. The need to focus upon global–local rather than urban–rural differences is emphasised. Implications for those who advise and seek to help rural businesses are considered.     

Response distortion in adolescents who smoke: a pilot study

A wide range of data are obtained with self-report. Information obtained from persons using substances is generally reliable and valid, however, many studies show that some proportion of self-reports regarding substance use are inaccurate. This study examines self-reported response distortion in adolescents who received a brief intervention to reduce their smoking. Findings indicate that age and ethnicity of respondent may influence reported response distortion. Factors that appear to influence under- and over-reporting include social desirability and fear of repercussion. Response distortion does not appear to affect rated usefulness of the intervention, nor does intervention type appear to influence whether respondents thought the researcher wanted them to report less use. Results point to the need for further research regarding adolescents and response distortion.     

Teenagers’ Internet Use and Family Rules: A Research Note

The Internet poses challenges to parents who want their children to take advantage of online resources but also want to protect their children from questionable content. Using data from 749 dyads of American parents and their teenage children with Internet access, this study finds that the majority of parents report regulating their teenage children's Internet use, but parents report more monitoring (61%) than teens report (38%). Multivariate regression analyses indicate fathers, younger parents, parents who use the Internet with their children, and parents with younger teens engage in a higher level of parental monitoring. This study provides a first look at parental monitoring of children's Internet use and points to the need to study family rules from both parents’ and children's perspectives.     

Polarization and progress in the black community: Earnings and status gains for young black males in the era of affirmative action

We examined the occupational mobility and earnings attainment of young black and white male workers in the period 1974–1981 for evidence of class polarization among blacks in the era following the 1960s' antidiscrimination legislation. Our model links occupational status and earnings to the social resources of education and father's socioeconomic status, using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, 1968–1981. The results suggest that such resources operated more strongly for advantaged blacks than for whites. But for less advantaged blacks, race remained a significant barrier. As predicted by the polarization hypothesis, enforcement of affirmative action guidelines was beneficial, but only to more qualified blacks.An earlier version of this paper was presented at the annual meetings of the Society for the Study of Social Problems, August 1987.
