Recent trends in marital disruption

The post-1980 decline in the crude divorce rate must be interpreted in the context of the long-term trend and in terms of what we know about composition effects on crude measures-particularly given shifts in age at marriage and the age composition effects of the baby boom. Data from the June 1985 Current Population Survey permit more detailed, exposure-specific measurements as well as the use of separation as the event terminating marriage. Estimates from these data suggest a decline followed by a recovery. Taking into account well-known levels of underreporting, we find that recent rates imply that about two-thirds of all first marriages are likely to end in separation or divorce. We examine the persistence of major differences in marital stability and evaluate the comparative stability of first and second marriages.     

OUTPATIENT COMMITMENT AS BOTH SOCIAL CONTROL AND LEAST RESTRICTIVE ALTERNATIVE

Outpatient commitment (OPC) permits compulsory outpatient treatment of the mentally ill. This study examines the wider institutional or normative purposes of OPC: greater social control of the mentally ill in the community and a less restrictive environment than inpatient commitment. OPC's ability to meet these contradictory institutional demands—social control and greater individual liberty—is explicated by the institutional theory of organizational activity and based on two data sources. First, case studies of four community mental health centers reveal the organizational beliefs that define OPC as social control and/or a least restrictive patient environment. Second, data collected in North Carolina from patients ordered to OPC and their primary therapists demonstrate that in practice OPC does provide both a least restrictive alternative as well as greater community social control.     

‘Children in Need’: Using Geographical Information Systems to Inform Strategic Planning for Social Service Provision

SUMMARY: Recent legislation, requires local authorities to provide services such as day care for children in need. New computer techniques for geo-spatial analysis—Geographical Information Systems—ore now muck used by local authorities in planning environmental and engineering services. This article explores the extent to which these techniques can be applied to social data and, in particular, whether they are useful for strategic planning of day care and other social service provision.
