Termination of one therapist in co-led group psychotherapy

This article describes the termination of one group co-therapist without replacement. The period between J. W's announced departure and actual leaving brought into vivid perspective transference issues toward the co-therapists as a parental dyad. The rupture of this dyad had powerful consequences, which are discussed. In addition the therapist who remained (T.S.) had the unique opportunity to observe the group members reactions to termination after the termination actually took place. The group is presented and some process material is included.     

Conversion in a Billy Graham Crusade: Spontaneous Event or Ritual Performance?

Literature on religious conversion contains turnabout and ritualistic explanations. This paper examines the nature of the contemporary religious revival or crusade and finds evidence that revival conversions are ritualistic, integrative events. Crusaders are overwhelmingly church members and frequent church attenders. The Graham organization carefully structures the conversion process through local community organization, counselors, screening questions, literature, and church referrals. The crusade also emphasizes the integration of dependent-aged youth.     

The Corporate Family: Theory and Treatment*

The authors define characteristics of a corporate family style of functioning. An emphasis is placed on the need for sensitivity to the value structure of the family. Crisis is seen coming from a disruption in the support system of one or more members of the family. A treatment strategy with a case illustration is introduced based on strengthening the family using natural coping mechanisms in the community. The objective of treatment is to reinforce the family without necessarily challenging their values or style of functioning.     

LAW AS SYMBOLIC ACTION: KENNETH BURKE'S SOCIOLOGY OF LAW*

In this paper, I present Kenneth Burke's sociology of law as a critical interactionist alternative to the now dominant functionalist sociology of law. Burke's perspective conceives of the law as a form of symbolic action that contributes much to social order. Further it ties the structure and operation of the law to the ontological symbolicity of human being. Finally I suggest that the use of this theoretical framework in research on the place of law in society will produce results that are both critical and hermeneutic.     

Conducting research with community agencies: meeting recruitment and collaboration challenges

Family therapy outcome research with community agencies has been challenging for various reasons. In two recent research projects, it was found that providing active feedback to agencies about their clinical services via a clinical report and a research-agency liaison were successful strategies to develop a collaborative atmosphere with agencies. Specifically, the two strategies improved agency and therapist recruitment, client and therapist motivation, and reduced therapist and client attrition.     

Ergonomics evaluation of a government office building

An ergonomics team from the US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive medicine evaluated 465 video display terminal (VDT) workstations in a Government office building over an 18-day period. Each workstation evaluation involved an assessment of the worker, the chair, the desk, the keyboard, the pointing device, the monitor, and the office environmental conditions. The team also collected worker pain and injury information. The problems seen during the evaluation were characteristic of most office environments where VDT workstation furniture was purchased before the advent of mouse-driven software. The majority of furniture evaluated was not designed to meet the demands of intensive mouse use for prolonged periods of time. Much of the workstation furniture was not adjustable, chairs lacked adequate back support, and workers assumed non-neutral postures. As a result, more than 35% of the workers evaluated complained of on-the-job pain. New office furniture that is adjustable, adequate desk space and storage space were among the solutions recommended by the ergonomics team.     

Effects of group therapy on female adolescent survivors of sexual abuse: a pilot study

Treatment interventions for female sexual abuse survivors was explored through a pilot study examining the relationship between group treatment and adolescent self-image. Self-image was defined as body image, self-reliance, self-control, and impulse-control. An experimental pre-post design was utilized. Participants were 13 female adolescent high school drop-outs with a history of sexual abuse who participated in the National Guard Youth Challenge Program at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. Participants completed the Offer Self- Image Questionnaire for Adolescents. The hypothesis that group therapy was an effective intervention for sexual abuse survivors was not supported; however, this is likely due to the small sample size. Because this was a pilot study, mean trends were observed to see directional changes that may assist future researchers. Observation of mean trends revealed that participants who received group therapy increased in levels of impulse control while the group that did not receive group therapy remained the same. Mean trends also revealed that the experimental group had a decrease in self-reliance whereas the control group maintained their levels of self-reliance.     

Subfield history: Caenorhabditis elegans as a system for analysis of the genetics of aging

This article reviews key events in the genetic analysis of aging in the worm. The events are presented in the form of a timeline and include landmark papers, key meetings, and the development of important funding agencies. I also speculate on events that might appear in this timeline if this review were written in the distant future.
