Millennials, those born in 1982 or later, represent the largest and most racially diverse generation, as well as the fastest-growing segment of the workforce. They have been characterized in the popular press as being entitled and lacking a strong work ethic. Millennial agency practitioners were surveyed to determine how they rate their relationships with their employers. We also explored the role of gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. We asked respondents to identify the stresses they experience in those relationships and to suggest ways in which their employers could improve relations. African American and Hispanic older adults are underrepresented in assisted living communities, so little is known about how they experience social relationships in these settings. The purpose of the study was to explore resident-to-resident and resident-to-staff relationships experienced and perceived by African American and Hispanic older residents in assisted living settings. In-depth interviews with 15 African American and 15 Hispanic older adults were conducted in seven assisted living communities in Central Florida. Three salient themes emerged using a grounded theory approach: formation of relationships: emotional vs. instrumental support; language as a facilitator or barrier; and avoidance of inter-racial relationships. Implications for providing culturally competent services in assisted living communities with diverse populations are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to report the influence of gender on aging with childhood onset paralytic polio. The hermeneutic phenomenological exploration of gender was done using multiple qualitative interviews with 25 women, age 55 to 75 years of age, who had polio since before 14 years of age. We noted three themes: (a) the movement of her body, (b) integrating body and gender, and (c) gender discrepancies. Asthma is the most commonly occurring chronic childhood disease in the United States and is the leading cause of hospitalization and missed school days. In this article, I examine whether differences in asthma diagnosis can be attributed to differences in breastfeeding incidence and duration. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Survey, I examine whether unobserved heterogeneity in the breastfeeding decision plays a role in childhood asthma propensity. I use the recursive bivariate probit framework to account for potential endogeneity by modeling the breastfeeding and asthma equations jointly. Results indicate that after accounting for the unobserved heterogeneity found in infant feeding practices, breastfeeding leads to lower rates of asthma diagnosis in children at age one. Breastfeeding for at least 3 months appears to have the strongest effects in children diagnosed at age one. However, there are no discernible effects of breastfeeding on the incidence of asthma by age three. These results indicate that breastfeeding can result in lower rates of wheezing and better respiratory health in small children.  相似文献

Using data drawn from telephone interviews with Ohio Works First program managers (N = 69), we examine managers' moral identity work. This work included using militarized rhetoric to evoke moral identities as honorable workers. It also involved signifying helper/helpful moral identities by defining what it means to be helpful, legitimating their helper identity through connections to caseworkers, and affirming their identity through telling success stories. Additionally, managers implicitly othered clients they viewed as needy and politicians they considered to be out‐of‐touch. Our research contributes to the literature on welfare‐to‐work, but also more broadly to our understanding of moral identity work and implicit othering.  相似文献
