All business in working out their future relationships, need to have a continuous reading of social change.This article outlines the approach and conclusions of a firm which is involved with providing an ongoing study service for this aspect of planning.     

The Sample Selection Model from a Method of Moments Perspective

It is shown how the usual two-step estimator for the standard sample selection model can be seen as a method of moments estimator. Standard GMM theory can be brought to bear on this model, greatly simplifying the derivation of the asymptotic properties of this model. Using this setup, the asymptotic variance is derived in detail and a consistent estimator of it is obtained that is guaranteed to be positive definite, in contrast with the estimator given in the literature. It is demonstrated how the MM approach easily accommodates variations on the estimator, like the two-step IV estimator that handles endogenous regressors, and a two-step GLS estimator. Furthermore, it is shown that from the MM formulation, it is straightforward to derive various specification tests, in particular tests for selection bias, equivalence with the censored regression model, normality, homoskedasticity, and exogeneity.

The relationship between social work and environmental sustainability: Implications for interdisciplinary practice The Brundtland Commission, formally the World Commission on Environment and Development, established by the United Nations in 1983, links peace, security, development and the environment claiming that war, poverty and structural violence result in the oppression and degradation of the human community as well as the physical environment. Likewise, human rights and social and environmental justice are intertwined, and social work, as a profession that collaborates across disciplines and within communities, is uniquely situated to provide leadership in the field of environmental studies. Its strong focus on human rights, social justice and community building creates a sound base from which to engage in the collaborative, creative, interactional processes required for environmental practice. This article seeks to discern a model for environmental social work within the context of interdisciplinary practice with peace and conflict workers and through the integration of inclusive models of economic development.     

‘Birds of a Feather Flock Together’: The Impact of Choice of Spouse on Family Labor Income Inequality

Abstract. This paper analyzes to what extent the rise in women's labor force participation has led to ‘flocking together’, i.e. whether women with high labor income tend to be married to men with high labor income, or vice versa. Based on the decomposition of the Gini coefficient and a related index for the extent of ‘flocking together’ applied to labor income data for Norway for the period 1973–97, we find a tendency for ‘flocking together’ for all married couples, and married couples with two labor incomes.     

A case-study in the clinical epidemiology of psoriatic arthritis: multistate models and causal arguments

In psoriatic arthritis, permanent joint damage characterizes disease progression and represents a major debilitating aspect of the disease. Understanding the process of joint damage will assist in the treatment and disease management of patients. Multistate models provide a means to examine patterns of disease, such as symmetric joint damage. Additionally, the link between damage and the dynamic course of disease activity (represented by joint swelling and stress pain) at both the individual joint level and otherwise can be represented within a correlated multistate model framework. Correlation is reflected through the use of random effects for progressive models and robust variance estimation for non-progressive models. Such analyses, undertaken with data from a large psoriatic arthritis cohort, are discussed and the extent to which they permit causal reasoning is considered. For this, emphasis is given to the use of the Bradford Hill criteria for causation in observational studies and the concept of local (in)dependence to capture the dynamic nature of the relationships.     

Improving occupational safety in a bedding manufacturing plant: A case study in management problem solving

The development and evaluation of a data-based intervention program to reduce work-related injuries in a bedding manufacturing plant are described. This is an example of a “pure” study in the pragmatic paradigm, and therefore this article follows a nontraditional format. It is written for busy corporate managers rather than for social science researchers. [Editor's note: Because this article was written independently of the conceptual framework outlined in Table 3 of my introductory article to this Special Feature section, there is no formal discussion by Rose and Harshbarger of the issues raised by the table. However, these authors did provide feedback to me through personal communication that their report was very positively received by its target audience (company management) because of its clarity of presentation and its simple but dramatic message: significantly improved safety performance and bottom-line savings for the company. In addition. Rose and Harshbarger reported that they were able to follow up this project with similar, very successful safety programs at several other large corporations.]     

Cultural Representation of Disabled People: Dustbins for Disavowal?

Impairment and imagery are neglected within the social model approaches to disability. This is connected to a neglect of representation. Comparing the experience of disabled people to that of women, I explore the prejudice underlying cultural representation, using a variety of theoretical models. I conclude by suggesting an explanation for popular prejudice against disabled people.
