Consumer spending in the gaming industry: evidence of complementary demand in casino and online venues

Brick and mortar gambling stakeholders have scrutinized Internet gambling sites over concern that online operators may serve as substitutes for their products. In some cases, this has led to regulatory protection to prevent or restrict entry by online providers. However, many industry observers have remarked that the two gambling modalities may serve different consumers/consumer needs, or even serve as complementary goods. Policymakers, who look to gambling as an important source of tax revenue, must determine how expansion of Internet gambling will affect overall economic welfare. Using self-reported consumer gambling behaviour data from the United Kingdom, the net effect of Internet-based gambling activity on land-based demand is estimated in this study. A robust complementary (positive) relationship between online and offline gambling is found, using ordinary least squares, two-stage least squares, and two-part modeling techniques. These particular findings suggest that economic concerns around the cannibalization of traditional gambling industries should be reconsidered, and provide support for prior research showing that Internet based firms can be complementary to brick and mortar businesses.     

Us and them: the influence of discourses of nationalism on media coverage of the Paralympics

Recent research suggests that the mainstream media representation of disabled athletes increasingly fits within the ‘norms’ of sports reporting. This study interrogates this suggestion, using the theoretical tools of cultural studies to compare representations of athletes from ‘our’ nation with athletes from other countries. The results suggest the change may be related primarily to athletes who can be constructed as being more like ‘Us’ through their national affiliation rather than to a revolution in how journalists see disability sport. For those focused on creating progressive images of disability (such as increasing the visibility, depth and complexity of reporting), this finding may offer a way forward. Through understanding the conditions under which athletes might become publicly visible, disability sport organizations gain tools that may enhance their promotional activities.     

Issues surrounding sibling death during-adolescence

This paper will examine the inability of adolescents to mourn their siblings and the resultant isolation from family and peers caused by their insistence on a stance of normalcy. The issues of adolescence—consolidation of ego identity, emotional separation from the family, and the concomitant greater investment in the peer group—are all impacted upon by the death of a sibling. An examination of the effect of sibling death on this process will show how the inability of the adolescent to pass through the separation individuation process of adolescence or to give up the libidinal cathexis of the lost object (the goal of mourning) leads to an emotional overinvestment in the family of origin.     

Multivariate sufficient statistics using Kronecker products

We present a multivariate sufficient statistic using Kronecker products that dramatically increases computational efficiency in evaluating likelihood functions and/or posterior distributions. In particular, we examine the example of multivariate regression in a Bayesian setting. We compare the computation time for using the Gibbs sampler both with and without the sufficient statistic. We show that the difference in computation time grows quadratically with the number of covariates and products and linearly with the number of individuals. In the simulation study, speedup factors ranging from at least 20 times to almost 300 times were observed when using the Kronecker sufficient statistic.     

Blurring the boundaries of sports public relations: National stereotypes as sport announcers’ public relations tools

Live media coverage is a key element of the relationship between a sport and its publics. The role of television producers, including announcers, is to connect effectively with the public, creating an entertaining and engaging package that keeps viewers watching. In considering this as an aspect of public relations, this paper explores how national stereotypes function to present a consistent and easily interpretable set of messages that capture publics by reinforcing their existing understandings and by providing resources for enhancing the drama and uncertainty that is such a desirable aspect of the sport audience experience. Mapping the elements of the stereotype of Frenchness in rugby union as a case study, our analysis is based on interviews with well-known French and New Zealand rugby union announcers and analyses of a decade of broadcasts of France versus New Zealand tests. We conclude that the use of stereotypes, based on the creation of differences between national teams, can be conceived of as an effective form of public relations which heightens interest and reinforces patriotic subject positions for viewers and therefore mobilises a national public.     

Unique crisis response strategies in sports public relations: Rugby league and the case for diversion

Sport is a unique ‘product’ in that most of its messages and images are conveyed through media coverage rather than through advertising or sales campaigns. While the coverage is usually positive, media interest becomes more problematic in high profile scandals which can be very damaging. In this paper, we propose that the culture of elite men's sport and its interdependence with mass media creates a situation in which sports public relations personnel have access to crisis communication strategies not previously specified in the existing literature. Based on textual analysis of media coverage of an Australasian men's rugby league salary cap scandal, we argue that, in certain situations, a sports organisation may draw upon a crisis response strategy that we term diversion in order to successfully limit the damage to the organisation's reputation. In particular, we suggest that the often intense ‘relationship’ that fans have with players may allow team sports to focus attention on players (and fans) as innocent victims with the result that negative publicity for the sport overall is reduced.     

Resistance and preoedipal object relations

This paper attempts to elaborate on the distinction between resistance stemming from underlying well working defensive processes in neurotic conflict, and resistancelike behavior denoting a progressive development thrust and adaptive solutions in the understructured personality. A case is used to illustrate how preoedipal object relations can be embedded in resistant-like behavior. Within the case illustration there is an attempt to show how interpretations directed to developmental need and preoedipal object relation conflicts facilitate higher levels of ego organization.
