Criteria for the equality between ordinary least squares and best linear unbiased estimators under certain linear models

A new necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the equality between the ordinary least-squares estimator and the best linear unbiased estimator of the expectation vector in linear models with certain specific design matrices. This condition is then applied to special cases involving one-way and two-way classification models.     

HELP AND HINDRANCE: PARENTS OF DIVORCING CHILDREN*

Much research exists on the impact of divorce on the nuclear family. Less is known about the response of the extended family to a divorce. In this study, the authors examined divorcing children's perceptions of their parents' behavior; divorcing children experienced their parents' reactions as supportive, non-supportive, or “mixed.” Types of helpful behaviors were categorized and patterns of unhelpful parental behavior were elaborated. Implications of the study for therapy and for an understanding of parent-adult child relationships are discussed.     

The Conversation

A critical, interpretive reading of Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 film The Conversation is offered. As an example of reflexive cinema, this film unravels the ideological arguments that support the investigative-voyeuristic gaze, whether that is the gaze of the ethnographer, the sociologist, or the wiretap expert. The relationships between sociological, ethnographic and cinematic realism are examined. The need for greater reflexivity in our sociological–investigative practices is suggested.     

Rhode Island's child protective service system

Rhode Island has found that an adaptation of the Illinois child protective services system has successfully enabled it to improve its protective service, giving primacy to children's rights while minimizing intrusion on family privacy.     

On the optimality of a class of minimal covering designs

It is shown that the minimal covering designs for v=6t+5 treatments in blocks of size 3 are optimal w.r.t. a large class of optimality criteria. This class of optimality criteria includes the well-known criteria of A-, D- and E-optimality. It is conjectured that these designs are also optimal w.r.t. other criteria suggested by Takeuchi (1961).     

Gibbardian libertarian claims revisited

Two resolution schemes for the impossibility theorems on the Gibbard-Kelly claims of libertarian rights, which are rather contrasting with each other, are proposed and their implications discussed. The first scheme asserts that there exists a collective choice rule satisfying the Pareto principle and the Gibbard-Kelly libertarian claims if there exists at least one socially unconcerned individual. The second scheme asserts existence of an eligible collective choice rule if there exists at least one liberal individual.
