Abstract Although audio-visual materials are commonly used on college and university campuses, frequently those materials are not evaluated to determine what impact they may have on students' attitudes. The present research compared the effect of three audio-visual programs on attitudes of college students toward homosexuality. The three programs included a film that dealt with prejudice towards numerous groups but not towards homosexuals; a video-tape of a homosexual clergyman who discussed sexual variance with particular emphasis on homosexuality; and two films in which couples were explicitly engaging in homosexual behavior. A control group was used. All groups received a lecture about homosexuality. Using a two-way analysis of covariance, significant differences were found among the groups. Subjects that watched the film on prejudice and the video-tape of a discussion of homosexuality, as well as the control group, were all significantly more tolerant toward homosexuality than subjects who watched the explicit films. The difference among groups was immediate only. Five weeks after exposure to audio-visual programs, there were no significant differences. There was no significant difference between males and females, either immediately after seeing the programs or five weeks later. Thus, attitudes of college students toward homosexuality can be altered and were not gender specific. 相似文献

This paper attempts to show that a philosophical redefinition of the locus of social problems demands a fundamental change in micro-level intervention. A framework and model are introduced that describe a reconceptualization of social work practice rooted in the social-welfare-through-social-change philosophy. Four types of worker activity provide the framework for micro- and macro-level specialization. A micro-level intervention model is then defined in terms of four practice principles: (1) accountability to the client, (2) following the demands of the client task, (3) maximizing environmental supports, and (4) proceeding from an assumption of least content. 相似文献

Sweden and The Netherlands are often referred to as the archetypes of prohibition and harm reduction, respectively. Both nations have, however, recently adopted political measures that fit well in the other country's model. But they have also taken steps that reflect traditional thinking. Are we witnessing the initial stages of convergence or are recent developments better interpreted as adjustments? This article addresses these questions by comparing Swedish and Dutch theoretical understandings of ‘the drug problem’. Goals and practices are illuminated in the context of underlying theory, raising the question: Can substantial convergence be achieved without significant prior changes in theoretical perceptions? It is found that the theoretical understandings of the two paradigms do not mix easily, complicating attempts at convergence. Moreover, both countries have invested a great deal of political prestige in their respective models, further exacerbating the problem. Problems with ambulation and mobility are frequent problems in older adults. Each year, about one in 100 older adults develops new severe mobility disability. Assessment of abnormal gait constitutes a major component of clinical practice and may lead to fall reduction. Clinicians can benefit from simple gait and mobility assessment tools to be used in busy clinical settings. Evaluation of the mortality impact of nationwide disease-prevention efforts is complicated by potential endogeneity: programme recipients may have unobserved characteristics that simultaneously make them both more likely to become recipients and more likely to survive as a result of other health practices. This population-based study assesses the mortality impact of a nationwide programme that distributed insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to mothers of children aged 9-59 months in Togo. By comparing mortality rates before and after the programme according to households' eligibility status, we demonstrate that a one-time programme that restricts eligibility to households with a surviving child excludes some households with a high risk of child mortality. We then apply simultaneous estimation models to untangle the mortality impact of ITNs from the effects of unobserved confounders and show that among eligible households, living in a household with ITNs significantly reduces mortality for children aged 20-59 months, even after controlling for endogeneity. 相似文献

In Southern Africa, high adult HIV prevalence has fueled concern about the welfare of children losing parents to the epidemic.
A growing body of evidence indicates that parental, particularly maternal, death is negatively associated with child outcomes.
However, a better understanding of the mechanisms is needed. In addition, the way orphan disadvantage and the mechanisms giving
rise to it are understood on the ground is essential for the successful translation of research into policies and programs.
This study employs data from 89 in-depth interviews with caregivers and key informants in Lesotho, a setting where approximately
one-quarter of adults is infected with HIV, to elaborate understandings of orphan disadvantage. Our analysis focuses on two
questions: (i) Do local actors perceive orphans to be disadvantaged compared to non-orphans, and if so, in what ways; and
(ii) How do they explain orphans’ differential disadvantage? Analyses suggest that orphans were widely perceived to be disadvantaged;
respondents described this disadvantage in material as well as affective domains. Thematic analyses reveal five broad categories
of explanation: poverty, love and kin connection, caregiver character, perceptions of orphans, and community norms related
to orphan care. These results underscore the need for research and policy to address (i) multiple types of disadvantage, including
deficits in kindness and attention; and (ii) the social embeddedness of disadvantage, recognizing that poverty, kinship, and
community interact with individual attributes to shape caregiving relationships and child experiences. The findings suggest
limited success for programs and policies that do not address the emotional needs of children, or that focus on child or caregiver
support to the exclusion of community outreach. 相似文献
