Measuring organizational effectiveness in information and communication technology companies using item response theory

The aim of this paper is to measure the effectiveness of the organizations Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from the point of view of the manager, using Item Response Theory (IRT). There is a need to verify the effectiveness of these organizations which are normally associated to complex, dynamic, and competitive environments. In academic literature, there is disagreement surrounding the concept of organizational effectiveness and its measurement. A construct was elaborated based on dimensions of effectiveness towards the construction of the items of the questionnaire which submitted to specialists for evaluation. It demonstrated itself to be viable in measuring organizational effectiveness of ICT companies under the point of view of a manager through using Two-Parameter Logistic Model (2PLM) of the IRT. This modeling permits us to evaluate the quality and property of each item placed within a single scale: items and respondents, which is not possible when using other similar tools.     

Accessibility for all: going from theory to practice

The present work demonstrates, through a case study, the importance of theoretical knowledge in practical application of spatial accessibility in order to guarantee equal conditions for all people in the movement and use of space. Initially there was a literature review on the accessibility of space and how design in a accessible way. Next, we show one makeover proposal in one public school that wants to provide access to people with disabilities. This makeover was done and so we could evaluate the buildings changes through the method of accompanied walk with two people. Finally we present the main results and discussions.     

Romaphobia and the media: mechanisms of power and the politics of representations

ABSTRACT

This special issue of Identities, entitled ‘Romaphobia and the media’, examines entrenched and ongoing media coverage of Roma, Gypsy and Traveller people across Europe. The focus is on how the media problematises the Roma, how it constructs a ‘conceptual map’ about Roma people and what this tells us about the societies we live in. This special issue includes five academic articles all examining the constructions and stereotypes used in the media in various formats and European countries. After these academic articles, this special issue then deviates from the normal journal structure by including three commentary pieces from professionals from varying Roma backgrounds to give their views and experiences on how they tackle Romaphobia and the media. The inclusion of these commentary pieces are very powerful in offering a perspective of active interventions and resistance that we should not forget amidst the depressing continued circulation of racialised stereotypes.     

Comparing income poverty gap and deprivation on social acceptance: A mediation model with interpersonal communication and social support

In many developed countries or regions, wide income disparities increase the difficulty in reducing poverty. In their day‐to‐day lives, poor people often feel less accepted by the society. The failures in communicating with social groups and receiving social support lead to negative consequences on individual well‐being and higher level of social exclusion. Based on the debate upon alternative approaches to conceptualizing and operationalizing poverty, this study attempts to verify a mediation model with data from a household survey (N = 1,202) in Hong Kong. The results of structural equation modelling reveal that deprivation is a more powerful indicator than income poverty for specifying the negative relations of poverty with interpersonal communication, social support, and social acceptance; the negative impact of deprivation on social acceptance can be reduced by two significant mediators of interpersonal communication and social support. The results are discussed in terms of directions for future research and policy and welfare intervention.     

Contesting disabling conditions of life in the Global South: disability activists’ and service providers’ experiences in Guyana

This article addresses an important gap in our understanding of issues of impairment and disability, namely challenges facing disabled activists and service providers in the majority world context of the developing nation of Guyana. The article argues that developing a southern standpoint on impairment, disability, disability activism and service provision requires a reframing of disability issues as matters of distributive justice and not only human rights. Challenges facing disability activists and service providers in Guyana included trying to combat internalized ableism, financial and cultural barriers to political engagement and visibility, tensions in claiming or rejecting disabled identities and difficulties in accessing foreign aid funding for disability initiatives. The article concludes by stressing the importance of rethinking how we do disability studies so that it allows critical analysis of the dynamics of a global capitalist corporeal class order in the context of the majority world.     

Shiftwork tolerance and 24-h variations in moods

Abstract

The objective of the study was to identify the differences in 24-h variations in moods between three groups of oil-refinery workers: tolerant shiftworkers, intolerant shiftworkers and workers who had never worked in shifts. Each group comprised 29 workers matched by age. The mood measurements were taken during a 24-h period every 2 h starting from 08:00 h. Results were scored for three scales: positive moods, negative moods and fatigue. The two-factor ANOVA revealed the significant main effect of groups for all three moods indicating differences at the average level of 24-h variations in all moods between workers who differed in the degree of tolerance to shiftwork. The significant main effect of time of day was also found for all moods while the reliable interaction between groups and time of day was observed for negative moods only, indicating a different shape of 24-h variations for non-shiftworkers in comparison to shiftworkers.

A. S. Serafimovich’s Forgotten Novel,City in the Steppe (1912)

La plupart des écrits prérévolutionnaires de A. S. Serafimovich se trouve reléguée à l’ombre par la popularité en Union Soviétique de son roman "classique" Torrent de fer, 1924. Son premier et son plus long roman, Ville dans la Steppe, 1912, est l’une de ses oeuvres les plus achevées; une synthèse tragique et pittoresque de ces forces lointaines et sourdes concrétisées par le régime capitaliste en Russie à la fin du 19ème siècle. Cet article souligne surtout le dépouillement du monde intérieur des personnages principaux du roman – Zakharka et Polynov – que l’écrivain accomplit magistralement avec de l’acuité psychologique et une imagination puissante. Les destins de ces deux hommes opposés s’entrecroisent d’une façon qui ressemble les coups dans une partie d’échecs. Par une antithèse saisissante, Serafimovitch dévoile l’état de ces deux âmes destinées à être détruites parmi les bestialités d’un milieu capitaliste. L’auteur met en jeu ses ressorts psychologiques pour rendre les personnages secondaires et épisodiques également émouvants et mémorables. On trouve dans la caractérisation des faiblesses, des banalités, un certain pessimisme, parfois des exagérations, mais le tout est compensé par les analyses originales et inquiétantes dont l’auteur empreint toutes ses images. Riche en péripéties, sans être confus, le développement des faits dans le roman a une certaine valeur socio-historique.     

The Language of Globalization,Transnationality and Feminism

This article considers recent feminist actions in the Asia-Pacific region, which have involved transnational collaboration. This provides a site for a discussion of the relationship between language, discourse, cultural practices, political economy, activism and social transformation. It is argued recent examples of transnational feminist collaboration have either been based on a logic of similarity and affiliation or on a recognition of mutual imbrication in structures of inequality.
