In this paper, we describe recent trends in attitudes toward immigration in North America, and we suggest how these attitudes are likely to be affected by the September 11, 2001 "Attack on America." We begin by explaining why public attitudes toward immigration are important, and describe recent trends in these attitudes in the United States and Canada. Then, we apply psychological perspectives to predicting how these attitudes are likely to change in response to the events of September 11th. In particular, we describe expected short-term changes in immigration attitudes and expected long-term trends. We conclude by suggesting that an understanding of the psychological processes underlying unfavorable attitudes may assist in counteracting these effects; we also suggest that policy makers will be faced with the difficult task of balancing the need for a sense of security for members of the national group, and maintenance of the positive features of current immigration policies.  相似文献

The marginalized frailty model is often used for the analysis of correlated times in survival data. When only two correlated times are analyzed, this model is often referred to as the Clayton–Oakes model [7,22]. With time-to-event data, there may exist multiple end points (competing risks) suggesting that an analysis focusing on all available outcomes is of interest. The purpose of this work is to extend the single risk marginalized frailty model to the multiple risk setting via cause-specific hazards (CSH). The methods herein make use of the marginalized frailty model described by Pipper and Martinussen [24]. As such, this work uses the martingale theory to develop a likelihood based on estimating equations and observed histories. The proposed multivariate CSH model yields marginal regression parameter estimates while accommodating the clustering of outcomes. The multivariate CSH model can be fitted using a data augmentation algorithm described by Lunn and McNeil [21] or by fitting a series of single risk models for each of the competing risks. An example of the application of the multivariate CSH model is provided through the analysis of a family-based follow-up study of breast cancer with death in absence of breast cancer as a competing risk.  相似文献

When replacing an executive, an organization is faced with the choice of either promoting someone internally or hiring an outsider. Prior research in the private sector supports the contention that poor performing organizations will be adaptive and seek an outsider in hopes of initiating change that will improve performance. Do public organizations behave similarly? We address this question in the context of public education and examine the superintendent hiring decisions in 491 school districts. We find that school boards make sophisticated assessments of the district’s performance and these assessments influence their selection decisions.  相似文献

Only a small proportion of research in the sociological field of arts and culture is on the state and its effects. Literature which touches on this topic often comes from the policy arena and the wide variety of disciplines interested in public policy. Research tends to focus on two key themes: funding and censorship. But the effects of state actions are much broader. Moreover, state support is often set in opposition to the market, but markets and state systems usually exist together. It is ironic that the effects of the state on cultural organizations are increasingly studied at just this point in time, when states are scaling back their involvement and privatization is coming to the fore. Focusing on cultural organizations usually associated with the fine arts (museums and performing arts organizations), I illustrate some of these themes with a discussion of recent events in the UK.  相似文献
