Legislating for Filial Piety: An Indirect Approach to Promoting Family Support and Responsibility for Older People in Korea

Although every culture follows its own indigenous elder care practices, Korea has retained a unique way of supporting elder parents, specifically, and older people in general. When the care of older people in Korea became significantly challenging, it was determined to launch a controversial law to promote the tradition of filial piety. The main content of the law consists of requiring the government to take action to encourage filial piety and to support those adult children who care for their parents. Although this legislation has the potential to promote the practice of filial piety, the nature of the law is largely rhetorical and symbolic rather than practical, and as a result, its workability and efficiency are limited.     

Relationship Between Sarcopenia and Fracture Risks in Obese Postmenopausal Women

ABSTRACT

It is known that obesity is inversely correlated with fracture risk. It remains unclear if a low muscle mass (sarcopenia) modulates the relationship between obesity and bone mass density. Twenty-seven obese women were matched for total fat mass (± 0.5 kg) and age (± 4 yrs) and divided in 3 equal groups: class II sarcopenic, class I sarcopenic, and nonsarcopenic. Body composition (DXA) and dietary intake were measured. Our results suggest that obesity may offer some protection against osteoporosis, even in sarcopenic postmenopausal women. However, further studies are needed to examine the actual implication of these results on a clinical standpoint.     

Development of dual technology roadmap (TRM) for open innovation: Structure and typology

Today, innovation is no longer viewed as taking place within a single firm – but opening up the innovation process is still not a simple task. In open innovation, the mechanisms of incorporating external resources into the development process need to be carefully managed. This paper suggests a dual technology roadmap (TRM) that considers both internal and external firms. First, we introduce the concept of a dual TRM that considers partner resources as well as internal resources. Second, we suggest the structure of a dual TRM that uses dual planning objects. Third, three types of dual TRM are suggested, with three case examples.     

The Generality and Particularity of Labor Migration in China

Labor migration among regions and between the urban-rural has been a popular research topic in labor economics,development economics, industrial economics and regional economics.The world economy development history proves that such labor migration is inevitable economic phenomenon in the process of economic development.However,there are some keys to better understand China’s labor migration,such as what are the characteristics of China’s labor migration? What differences are there in China’s labor migration compared with that of the development countries and other developing countries? What are the connotational and theoretical implications of China’s labor migration? These are the core questions of this paper.Understanding these questions will patch up the shortages in the existing researches of the field,lay solid foundation and provide valuable reference for the economic effects, the welfare effects of China’s labor migration and associated institutional arrangements and macroeconomic policies.

Consumer health crisis management: Apple's crisis responsibility for iPod-related hearing loss

This study used a content analysis of Apple's lawsuit concerning hearing loss, exploring how for-profit organizations manage health-related crises when products are suspected of having a potentially devastating impact on consumers’ health. By integrating two major approaches in a crisis communication, this study found that severity of damage, locus of control, business size, and the external public's claim were major contingent factors generating the organization's responsibility for consumer health crises.
