The prospects of Chinese population growth from 1978 to 2028]

The author presents two alternative projections of the future growth of the Chinese population. The first describes the probable population in 2000 based on official estimates for 1978 and assuming that national population policy goals can be implemented. The second projects population growth for the period 1978-2028 based on the 1978 age composition of the population and average birth and death rates for the period 1973-1978. Two conclusions are drawn. First, the national goal of zero population growth by 2000 will not be reached; at the earliest, the population will cease to grow in 2015. Second, in 2003 and 2028 the young population will greatly outnumber the aged, and in 50 years time half the population will be over 40 years of age.     

An expert system for statistical consulting

The authors have developed an expert system for the analysis of variance to provide guidance to the data analyst on preparing data, selecting statistical methods and choosing computer programs. This system queries the user on the type of data, sampling method and design considerations. It then suggests an appropriate analysis of variance routine and statistical package. The system provides help in understanding the computer output and with model evaluation. The primary user is a scientist with some knowledge of statistics. This system gives the user easy access to statistical expertise and frees the consultant from some important but routine tasks. It may also be a tool to train users and statistical consultants. A significant benefit of this exercise was an increased understanding of the statistical strategies used by consultants and the complexity of the statistical consulting process between humans. This paper will focus on the problem formulation, acquisition of the knowledge base, the model structure and educational benefits.     

Exordium for DNA Codes

We describe how deletion-correcting codes may be enhanced to yield codes with double-strand DNA-sequence codewords. This enhancement involves abstractions of the pertinent aspects of DNA; it nevertheless ensures specificity of binding for all pairs of single strands derived from its codewords—the key desideratum of DNA codes– i.e. with binding feasible only between reverse complementary strands. We defer discussing the combinatorial-optimization superincumbencies of code construction. Generalization of deletion similarity to an optimal sequence-alignment score could readily effect advantageous improvements (Kaderali, Master's Thesis, Informatics, U. Köln, 2001) but would render the combinatorics opaque. We mention motivating applications of DNA codes.
