We study a variant of classical scheduling, which is called scheduling with “end of sequence” information. It is known in advance that the last job has the longest processing time. Moreover, the last job is marked, and thus it
is known for every new job whether it is the final job of the sequence. We explore this model on two uniformly related machines,
that is, two machines with possibly different speeds. Two objectives are considered, maximizing the minimum completion time
and minimizing the maximum completion time (makespan). Let s be the speed ratio between the two machines, we consider the competitive ratios which are possible to achieve for the two
problems as functions of s. We present algorithms for different values of s and lower bounds on the competitive ratio. The proposed algorithms are best possible for a wide range of values of s. For the overall competitive ratio, we show tight bounds of ϕ + 1 ≈ 2.618 for the first problem, and upper and lower bounds
of 1.5 and 1.46557 for the second problem.

It has been advocated within corporate governance that institutional investors may discipline management in listed firms and
thereby alleviate the free rider problem associated with dispersed ownership. This article tests this hypothesis using a sample
of Danish listed firms during 1998–2001 determining, whether ownership by institutional investors impacts performance, measured
by Tobin’s q. Using three stage least squares, it is shown that aggregate ownership by institutional investors does not influence firm
performance. However, when decomposing the results, it is found that joint ownership by the largest two Danish institutional
investors, has a significant negative impact firm performance. Ownership by banks and to a lesser extent insurance companies
significantly influences firm performance positively. The results somehow challenge the conventional wisdom, arguing that
the black box view of institutional investors should be abandon. Therefore it is suggested that a more careful analysis should
be devoted to each institutional investors own legal environment.

Development of self-management by coaching? An expert survey on the promotion of self-management competenciesThe much-discussed assumption that business coaching promotes clients’ self-management competence was explored through an expert survey. In a qualitative questionnaire study, 20 professional coaches provided information on their conceptual understanding of self-management, their approaches to promoting client self-management and on strategies employed to assess intervention outcome. In addition, coaches specified the obstacles and constraints clients encounter when transferring improved self-management skills into everyday working life. The results corroborate the relevance of the self-management concept in a coaching context. The benefits resulting from an increased consideration of self-management processes in coaching research, vocational training courses and day-to-day coaching practice are discussed. The use of theoretical concepts which provide a guideline is recommended. 相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of enumerating all maximal motifs in an input string for the class of repeated motifs
with wild cards. A maximal motif is such a representative motif that is not properly contained in any larger motifs with the
same location lists. Although the enumeration problem for maximal motifs with wild cards has been studied in Parida et al.
(2001), Pisanti et al. (2003) and Pelfrêne et al. (2003), its output-polynomial time computability has been still open. The
main result of this paper is a polynomial space polynomial delay algorithm for the maximal motif enumeration problem for the
repeated motifs with wild cards. This algorithm enumerates all maximal motifs in an input string of length n in O(n
3) time per motif with O(n) space, in particular O(n
3) delay. The key of the algorithm is depth-first search on a tree-shaped search route over all maximal motifs based on a technique
called prefix-preserving closure extension. We also show an exponential lower bound and a succinctness result on the number
of maximal motifs, which indicate the limit of a straightforward approach. The results of the computational experiments show
that our algorithm can be applicable to huge string data such as genome data in practice, and does not take large additional
computational cost compared to usual frequent motif mining algorithms.

This paper analyses wage inequality with respect to gender and nationality within German establishments. It is a large-scale analysis based on linked employer-employee data from the Institute for Employment Research (LIAB). Wage inequality is measured as the intra-establishment pay gap by gender and nationality, taking into account that human capital may not be equally distributed across the different groups of employees. Consistent with economic theories of discrimination we find significant pay gaps by gender and nationality, even taking into consideration employees’ qualifications. We can show that pay differentials between men and women are much larger on average than those between Germans and non-Germans, and that both pay gaps exhibit a tremendous variation across establishments. Drawing on organisational theories we inquire as to how selected firm characteristics are related to the variation of these intra-firm pay gaps and derive hypotheses about which establishments have a greater incentive and/or are more able to pursue wage equality in their workforces. By use of regression analysis we then investigate whether variables that reflect the firms’ social, institutional and cultural environment and their resource requirements are empirically related to the sizes of the pay gaps. The results are rather ambiguous, suggesting larger, innovating and foreign-owned establishments with a larger share of non-German employees and with a collective bargaining agreement to have smaller gaps, particularly with respect to gender. 相似文献

This paper examines the quality of the relationship between business managements and works councils in small and medium-sized enterprises and strives for answering the question, which factors determine the quality. As ownership is an important determining factor of the establishment of works councils in small and medium-sized businesses, especially the impact of ownership on this relationship has been investigated. Agency theory and stewardship theory give hints that the owner management can have different impacts on this relationship. In order to test these contradictory hypotheses we have estimated a Heckman selection model to investigate which factors determine the quality of the relationship between business managements and works councils. Our results based on data generated from a survey in small and medium-sized enterprises conducted by the IfM Bonn in the years 2005 and 2006 indicate that ownership has a negative influence on the establishment of works councils, but a positive one on the quality of the relationship between business management and works council. Thus, the hypotheses predicting the existence of stewardship behaviour among owners and the existence of agency behaviour among managers can be confirmed. 相似文献

In many countries structured investment products are popular among retail investors. We explain the demand for these products
using unique field data where we let subjects freely design their “favorite” structured product. Results suggest that the
supply with capital protected products (guarantee certificates) might indeed be demand-driven. This does not seem to be the
case for other product categories where marketing and sales practices might play a more important role. In a survey among
financial practitioners we find furthermore that a demand for capital protected products can be explained by loss aversion
and saving motifs, e.g. for buying a house. 相似文献
