Grieving for mestizaje: alternative approaches to Maya identity in Yucatan,Mexico

This article takes as its point of departure the highly contested theoretical terrain of ‘Maya’ identity in Yucatan, Mexico. Set in the physical terrain of a state psychiatric hospital, this article uses a framework of identity culled from the narrative of a young woman, ‘Claudina’, committed to its wards, to argue that being ‘in-between’ categories of ethnic identity, an experience she characterises as a painful sense of ambiguous loss, can be fruitfully analysed using an analytical framework of ethnic identity introduced by Claudina herself. Specifically, I argue that categories of identity culled from Claudina's story – mestizaje and elegancia – represent a valuable opportunity to think about how power dynamics and relationships operate in situations of ambivalent identities and social suffering. To this end, I use Claudina's language as a point of departure for understanding the lived experience of everyday life in Yucatan today.     

‘We are not Victims,we are Protagonists of this History’

This article centers on the Mexican and Argentinean ‘Dirty Wars’, examining the limitations inherent in human rights and women's human rights responses to these epochs of violence. I situate Argentina's report on the dictatorship, Nunca más (1984), in conversation with Elena Poniatowska's text on the 1968 Mexico City massacre, La noche de Tlatelolco (1971), to trace the rise of a global human rights discourse that has become the dominant manner of conceptualizing human rights violations and gender violence in the latter half of the twentieth century. While feminist critiques of human rights have centered on the lack of gender-specific focus of violence committed against women, this article questions whether the women's human rights discourse disengages the historical, economic and geopolitical realities from which these violations were committed and instead focuses on women's sexual violations to garner international condemnation of gender violence. By turning to these texts, this article centers on the possibilities and limitations of women's human rights discourse and the impact this has on the shaping of women's political agency. This article calls for a critical feminist approach to women's human rights in order to document narratives of women survivors of human rights abuses without obfuscating their political subjectivities.     

L'insécurité de l'emploi et ses conséquences pour les salariés: l'effet modérateur de la dépendance envers l'emploi

La mondialisation et l'intensification de la concurrence internationale ont provoqué l'apparition de formes d'emploi flexibles et une précarisation de l'emploi. Le sentiment d'insécurité chez les salariés produit des effets sur leurs attitudes et leurs intentions que les auteurs se proposent d'examiner. Après un tour d'horizon des travaux de recherche sur la théorie du stress et la relation existant entre insécurité de l'emploi et ses conséquences, ils testent, sur un échantillon de 942 salariés d'Espagne, deux hypothèses. La première est que l'insécurité de l'emploi présente, d'une part, une corrélation négative avec la satisfaction au travail et l'engagement envers l'organisation et, d'autre part, une corrélation positive avec l'intention de quitter l'organisation; et la seconde, qu'il existe une interaction entre l'insécurité de l'emploi, le besoin économique et l'employabilité qui influe sur la prédiction de ces résultats.     

A multivariate uniformity test for the case of unknown support

A test for the hypothesis of uniformity on a support S⊂ℝ ^d is proposed. It is based on the use of multivariate spacings as those studied in Janson (Ann. Probab. 15:274–280, 1987). As a novel aspect, this test can be adapted to the case that the support S is unknown, provided that it fulfils the shape condition of λ-convexity. The consistency properties of this test are analyzed and its performance is checked through a small simulation study. The numerical problems involved in the practical calculation of the maximal spacing (which is required to obtain the test statistic) are also discussed in some detail.
