Binary Event String Analysis: A Compact Numerical Representation of the Event Tree

While the event tree is a useful diagrammatic aid to an appreciation of various event sequence possibilities, it is of a nature that suggests no obvious manner in which the associated probability data may be compiled as computer input. Here, we propose a complementary numerical representation of scenario possibilities which incorporates probability data in a succinct fashion. While its mnemonic properties facilitate the logical development of a system's characteristics, its compactness and unambiguity permit its utilization directly as computer input.     

Regional differences in marital fertility in the Netherlands in the second half of the nineteenth century

Abstract In the Netherlands, as in other countries, substantial regional differences in the birth rate have always been the rule rather than the exception. Of course, differences in crude birth rates may be attributed to a number of possible reasons, not all of them of primary demographic interest. For instance, according to the census of 31st December 1899, the number of women per 1,000 men in the province of Drenthe was only 924; in the province of Zuidholland the corresponding number was 1,073. It is clear that, ceteris paribus, the crude birth rate in Zuidholland would be about 7% higher than in Drenthe at that time. In such a case, the difference could reflect differences in economic development or job opportunities, factors not devoid of demographic significance, but only indirectly so.     

The foundations of the organizational culture literature: An integrative framework

A great deal has been written in recent years regarding aspects of corporate-cultural phenomena. This literature, however, should not be viewed as spontaneously emerging in the late 1970s. While increased international competition and, relatedly, the example of Japanese management appear to have prompted the discovery of culture in Western economic organizations, there is a large body of literature that preceded and has greatly influenced this recent corporate culture phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to take stock of this literature, to present a framework for integrating these earlier works, and to discuss its implications.     

Riley and Cohen: Investment managers

Riley and Cohen, a new, small firm of investment managers, is facing a series of ethical dilemmas. In each case the members of the firm must choose between taking an action which will help insure their survival as a firm or rejecting the action because of moral considerations. One group of such actions may involve the possibility of direct unethical behavior by the new firm, as payment of a bribe, providing a client with an escort service, and making an undesirable political contribution. Another group of problems deals with how their investment decisions should be influenced by their personal values and those of their clients. These cases include investments in firms which produce condoms or cigarettes, practice abortion, discriminate against women and religious groups, do business with South Africa or the Soviet Union, or are involved in gambling. A consultant will make recommendations to Riley and Cohen about what to do, but ultimately the decision is theirs.
