The importance of spirituality among gay and lesbian individuals

Religion is a conduit for expressing spirituality. Since most mainstream religions condemn any form of homosexuality one would expect that gay men and lesbians would have little to do with spirituality. Experts, however, believe that gay and lesbian individuals would especially benefit from spiritual nourishment because of the oppression they face. Using an instrument that measures spiritual well-being, this study investigated the spirituality of 93 gay and lesbian individuals. The findings revealed that respondents espoused high levels of spiritual well-being: how one relates to God (religious well-being) and how one feels about life (existential well-being). Those who identified with a formal religion and who attended religious services frequently espoused higher religious well-being. Respondents with a diagnosis of depression, on the other hand, espoused lower existential well-being. Multiple regression analyses revealed that existential well-being was a significant predictor of adjustment: having high self-esteem, accepting one's homosexual orientation, and feeling less alienated. In contrast, religious well-being was not a significant predictor of any measure of adjustment. These findings point to the importance of the existential aspect of spirituality among gay and lesbian individuals in determining adjustment. They also suggest that being well-adjusted does not entail being reconciled with a traditional religion or with a theistic belief.     

Data-swapping: A technique for disclosure control

This paper describes data-swapping as an approach to disclosure control for statistical databases. Data-swapping is a data transformation technique where the underlying statistics of the data are preserved. It can be used as a basis for microdata release or to justify the release of tabulations.     

TESTING THE LARGEST OF A SET OF CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS

A previous paper which studied the distribution of the smallest distance between N independent random points on the surface of a sphere is generalised to higher dimensions in order to study the distribution of the largest sample correlation coefficient between a set of independent normally distributed variables. Inclusion-exclusion arguments provide accurate bounds for the tail of this distribution, and by another argument more exact bounds are also found, one of which is an improvement on the result in the previous paper. Bounds are also found for the power of the test against the alternative hypothesis that one only of the population correlation coefficients is non-zero. The test is also shown to be the likelihood ratio test against the latter alternative.     

Training in Human Relations Skills as a Preferred Mode of Treatment for Married Couples*

While effective communication is recognized as important to marital adjustment, few therapeutic alternatives specifically attempt to teach improved communication skills in a systematic manner. In this study, five couples experiencing marital difficulties participated in a traditional therapy group with emphasis upon cathartic release and problem solving. A similar group of five couples participated in a training group consisting of a systematic didactic and experiential approach emphasizing the ability to discriminate and communicate helpfully. The results of outcome measures assessing gain in interpersonal skills and overall functioning indicate significant improvement in the training as compared to the traditional group.     

ON TWO-STAGE SUCCESSIVE SAMPLING

In repeated sampling enquiries application of method of successive sampling with partial replacement of units is advantageous. In this paper use of successive sampling technique when the sampling design is multi-stage has been studied. Estimates of population mean and its variance have been obtained (a) on the second occasion, and (b) on the h-th occasion under two systems of replacement, namely (i) by retaining only a fraction p of psu's along with their sample of ssu's, and (ii) by retaining all the psu's on the second occasion, but from each psu only a fraction p of the ssu's within them is retained. A cost function suitable to the design has been illustrated, with the help of data collected from a sample survey conducted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
