Self-perceived health status,gender, and work status

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the relationship between gender and self-perceived health status in Spanish retirees and housewives from a sample of 1,106 community-dwelling older adults. A multivariate linear regression model was used in which self-perceived health status was measured by the EQ-5D visual analogue scale and gender according to work status (retired men and women and housewives). Retired males reported a significantly better health status than housewives. Self-perceived health status was closely associated with physical, mental, and functional health and leisure activities. Finally, being a woman with complete dedication to domestic work is associated with a worse state of self-perceived health.     

A Nonparametric Test for Symmetry Based on Freeman and Halton's Ideas on Contingency Tables

In this article, we propose a nonparametric method to test for symmetry in bivariate data. By using the extension of Fisher's exact treatment for 2 × 2 contingency tables proposed by Freeman and Halton (1951 Freeman , G. H. , Halton , J. H. ( 1951 ). Then, by counting the number of observations belonging to each cell of a symmetric, appropriately built grid, we can produce the two samples of integers required to use this test for equal distribution. Innovation and corporate performance in the Spanish regions

This paper analyzes the relationship between corporate performance and innovative effort for a set of Spanish companies during the 2007–2013 period. For this purpose, we use a panel data model. We find evidence that the return on equity (ROE) and, in particular, sales revenues are positively influenced by corporate innovation. Moreover, we also find evidence that this positive relationship is stronger in large companies. The analysis regarding the age of the company indicates that, in start-ups or younger companies, innovation effort has a greater effect on corporate performance than in older companies.     

Things that make us different: analysis of deviance with time-use data

The constrained, non-normal nature of time-use data poses a challenge to ordinary analysis of variance. This paper investigates a computationally simple variance decomposition technique suitable for those data. As a by-product of the analysis, a measure of fit for systems of time-demand equations is proposed that possesses several useful properties.
