Staff appraisal interviews as a support of coping with a crisis. A case study The implementation of personnel development by launching a pilot project with staff appraisal interviews was part of a change-management process in a non-profit-organisation. This should be a way of supporting employees during this process. Those employees who took part in this project evaluated this management instrument positively. After that this instrument has been introduced for the whole organisation.     

Problem behaviors,substance abuse and sexual abuse in psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents with bulimia nervosa

Twenty-eight adolescent bulimics were compared to 201 psychiatrically hospitalized non-eating disordered patients. Non-eating disordered patients were found to be reliably more aggressive, delinquent, and under-controlled than patients with bulimia nervosa. Sexual abuse was found to be less prevalent among bulimic adolescents than comparison adolescents. No significant between group differences were achieved on any measure of alcohol/drug abuse. The behavioral profiles of substance abusing bulimics were highly similar to those of non-eating disordered patients. Three months follow-up of bulimic patients found that they were less depressed, had less somatization, and were less overcontrolled; however, they showed no reliable improvements in eating attitudes/behaviours or drug/alcohol use.     

Another Cautionary Note about R 2: Its Use in Weighted Least-Squares Regression Analysis

A recent article in this journal presented a variety of expressions for the coefficient of determination (R ²) and demonstrated that these expressions were generally not equivalent. The article discussed potential pitfalls in interpreting the R ² statistic in ordinary least-squares regression analysis. The current article extends this discussion to the case in which regression models are fit by weighted least squares and points out an additional pitfall that awaits the unwary data analyst. We show that unthinking reliance on the R ² statistic can lead to an overly optimistic interpretation of the proportion of variance accounted for in the regression. We propose a modification of the estimator and demonstrate its utility by example.     

Generalized Gauss–Hermite filtering

We consider a generalization of the Gauss–Hermite filter (GHF), where the filter density is represented by a Hermite expansion with leading Gaussian term (GGHF). Thus, the usual GHF is included as a special case. The moment equations for the time update are solved stepwise by Gauss–Hermite integration, and the measurement update is computed by the Bayes formula, again using numerical integration. The performance of the filter is compared numerically with the GHF, the UKF (unscented Kalman filter) and the EKF (extended Kalman filter) and leads to a lower mean squared filter error.
