A method to assess safety and resilience in radiopharmaceuticals production process

Radiopharmaceuticals are radiation-emitting substances used in medicine for radiotherapy and imaging diagnosis. A Research Institute, located in Rio de Janeiro, produces three radiopharmaceuticals: the sodium iodate is used in the diagnosis of thyroid dysfunctions, the meta-iodo-benzylguanidine is used in the diagnosis of cardiac diseases, and the fluordesoxyglucose is used in diagnosis in cardiology, oncology, neurology and neuropsychiatry. This paper presents a method to access safety and resilience in radiopharmaceuticals production processes. The method uses resilience indicators in order to proactively evaluate and manage the safety.     

Heterogeneity and varying effect in hazards regression

In the analysis of survival data, when nonproportional hazards are encountered, the Cox model is often extended to allow for a time-dependent effect by accommodating a varying coefficient. This extension, however, cannot resolve the nonproportionality caused by heterogeneity. In contrast, the heteroscedastic hazards regression (HHR) model is capable of modeling heterogeneity and thus can be applied when dealing with nonproportional hazards. In this paper, we study the application of the HHR model possibly equipped with varying coefficients. An LRR (logarithm of relative risk) plot is suggested when investigating the need to impose varying coefficients. Constancy and degeneration in the plot are used as diagnostic criteria. For the HHR model, a ‘piecewise effect’ (PE) analysis and an ‘average effect’ (AE) analysis are introduced. For the PE setting, we propose a score-type test for covariate-specific varying coefficients. The Stanford Heart Transplant data are analyzed for illustration. In the case of degeneration being destroyed by a polynomial covariate, piecewise constancy and/or monotonicity of the LRRs is considered as an alternative criterion based on the PE analysis. Finally, under the framework of the varying-coefficient HHR model, the meanings of the PE and AE analyses, along with their dynamic interpretation, are discussed.

Women’s Empowerment in the Context of Millennium Development Goal 3: A Case Study of Married Women in Ghana

This paper assesses women’s empowerment in Ghana in the light of the Millennium Development Goal 3. Data for the study were drawn from the 2008 Ghana Demographic Health Survey with an analytic sample of 1,876 married women aged 15–49. Using binary logistic regression in determining the factors that influence women empowerment, this paper examines the relationship between wealth and women’s involvement in household decision-making in the context of healthcare, large household purchases, daily house hold purchases and mobility. The findings show that wealthier married women were significantly more likely to be involved in decision-making on their own healthcare (OR = 2.14, p ≤ 0.001). Also, age, tertiary education and employment significantly shaped the involvement of married women in household decision-making in Ghana. Surprisingly, married women in the Upper East region (the second poorest) were significantly more likely to be involved in three measures of decision-making except for decisions on large household purchases relative to those in the Greater Accra region (the capital). Policies oriented towards an increase in accessibility to tertiary education, employment equity and the creation of income generating activities for women would enhance women’s empowerment in Ghana.     

Number of matches and matched people in the birthday problem

The well known birthday problem asks for the probability of at least one match out of a group of n people. Also of interest are the number of matches and the number of matched people. In this paper the means and variances of the number of matches and matched people are obtained. A generalization of the use of these methods to computer storage analysis is discussed.
